I saw this little tip on a show called doomsday preppers, and the lady was showing how to preserve food to last longer than it normally would.

Weird.

Mineral oil on the skin prevents loss of moisture, as it doesn't "soak in", but just sits on top.

Eggs gradually lose moisture, eventually "going bad". It's is why good eggs sink, and bad eggs will float if you put them in your kitchen sink. (How do I know this? I really have no idea where I picked that up)

So, I suppose, putting a heavy oil on your eggs could prevent them from losing moisture and going bad so quickly.


If she really is preparing for long term, I wonder why she just doesn't use powdered eggs?

Yes, eggshell is porous, it retards oxidation.   At grammas we used lard.

Mineral oil or oiling eggs is also a way that was used on goose population control to kill the eggs on billy the exterminator. The embrios inside couldn't get any air and they sufforcated and never hatched.

At any rate, the study found that the shelf life was only extended three weeks, so it's not exactly a long term solution.

I don't usually eat eggshells.

There's always some in the brownies though.

Actually you dont have to eat rats. There are companies making gourmet freeze dried foods that will last up to 30 years.

However, the smart bet is to do the sustainable thing, garden, chickens, cattle. all would be okay baring a nuclear war (eventually the fallout will cover the planet) or depending on where you are located geographically, if Yellowstone erupts.

Sense the maximum ash fall where I live would be about a centimeter or less, with negligible health impact, I aint too concerned.

As far as climate change after such an eruption, I am too far south for anything more than a cooling of climate rather than year round snow.

I suppose some could leak through to the egg itself, but be it lard or mineral oil, I don't plan on eating the eggshells, so it shouldn't be a problem.

And I wouldn't need them to last 9 to 12 months, just maybe a month or two.

Oh snap, there's my issue. I've been watching too many zombie movies, and assumed that "doomsday = can't go outside because the zombies will eat you".

Do you think apocalypse foodie would eat freeze dried foods if she snubs powdered eggs?

Yeah, but when you crack eggs open it will run across the shell.

Actually, the OVA Easy Crystallized eggs are the best.

We've been doing the canning/dehydrated food thing. We live in an area where wildfires happen every couple of years and we're probably due for an earthquake.

The eggs are not going to last over a month if you oil them. It only extends the shelf life for maybe a month at the most. I think the lady is a doofus if she thinks doing this to eggs is going to help her in an apocalypse.

Foody and apocalypse. That's funny. Ah the stuff people do should amaze me Sadly it doesn't.

Oh, there's all kinds of doomsday end of world as we know it things that could happen, economical collapse emp, volcano's ,polar earth shifts etc etc.
