Old-time training in some groups started with the dominant-to-be taking a collar to a mentor, and he or she was treated -exactly- as a slave. Over time, s/he learned things, and developed, and eventually "earned hir leathers". This is how the man who brought me into this way of life was trained, and it was how he trained me. However, the woman who was his companion (and is now my mate) was not managed this way -- he worked with her as a more "modern" mentorship. He seemed to sense that she wouldn't thrive the other way. I respect his sense. I hope that I am as sensitive to the proper instructional fit for the people that I work with. It is one gift that I can give him, now that he is dead -- to take what he taught me, and use it wisely. If you are truly uncomfortable with the idea of taking this man's collar, don't do it, but if you feel comfortable learning from the bottom up, there is a long and successful history of this for Masters in the lifestyle.
