Hanson666999 -> What's the difference? (2/7/2013 2:39:00 AM)

Hi there. Could someone please tell me what the difference is between a Dom and a Master when they're classified as separate things? I would prefer an intellectual answer but if you want to answer subjectively that's also fine. Thanks in advance for any answers to my question.

ARIES83 -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 3:20:55 AM)

I don't really think there is a good answer beyond,
Do you consider your partner a slave or a
submissive?

In one sense "master" is the term by which a slave
can refer to their owner, or generally to refer to a
person who owns slaves.
In this case "owns" can mean, "considers a partner
their possession."

In another sense master implies that some level of
mastery has been achieved and this would almost
always require a lot of experience.

Dom, in my opinion is a much broader and messier
term, but either way, they are just fluff, titles
aren't very important especially when they are self-
proclaimed.

In certain parts of the general BDSM "community," such as the leather community, "Master" signifies a rank and recognition of a person's skill and character.

Outside of those areas, though, the difference in the titles is fuzzy at best. I wouldn't say there's a huge difference between them, but that there are differences in the individuals who adopt the various titles that are applied to people who prefer being in charge and/or topping. Other people will disagree.

Like most things in life, the labels are less important than the substance.

DarkSteven -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 5:40:15 AM)

There's no single, agreed-upon definition of the difference between the two.

EsotericLady -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 7:45:43 AM)

After reading your profile, I would say that any labels or titles would be a moot point.

poise -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 8:28:15 AM)

Sure, but first, can you please explain, intellectually, the difference between this:

I'm looking to hook up with cum sluts, who want bareback use in their ass. I want to slam my
cock in your ass. I'm up for being fucked in my ass with strapons. I want to get fucked by slutty
transexual sluts who want to fill my ass with their warm spunk.

And this:
I prefer face to face meets.

LafayetteLady -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 10:17:13 AM)

Pretty much, lol.

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 4:23:11 PM)

"I will fuck strangers"... Very dangerous in today's world... You show up to fuck..they show up to rob you, to fulfill an unrealistic fantasy...

LanceHughes -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 4:35:23 PM)

::: SIGH :::

Intellectual answer..... Master is at one end of a continuim that runs across the board to slave at the other end. Problem is that there are NO boundaries....

Master, Doms, Daddies,.......... "Do me Bottoms", Service tops, ......... boys, subs, slaves

And not only no boundaries, but how 'bout a Master Daddy?  That is "A man in my bed, a boy in my arms, a slave in my life."  That is, I whip his ass, skull fuck him, and then fall asleep with cuddles.  In the morning that coffee is to be perfectly the way I like it. Laundry is clean, dishes are done, etc.  His household uniform is black leather shorts, boots, chastity device and his 24/7 locked chain.

Answer: whatever the fuck I decide.

LafayetteLady -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 4:48:24 PM)

Ok, I guess I'm just not up on all the terms...

What is "skull fucking?" I am pretty sure the picture in my mind is incorrect since it involves fitting a human head into orifices it really shouldn't go.

littlewonder -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 6:18:21 PM)

For those who have read my schpiel before, ignore [;)]

For me and me alone; you decide what's right for you:

sub: consents each and every time to every action. Uses a safeword. Usually their partner is a dom/me

slave: consents once and one only. Does not use a safeword. Usually their partner is a Master/Mistress

bottom: is the receiver of play for sensation purposes and not for power purposes. Partner usually called a Top.

switch: usually is both a top/bottom or sub/dom/me. The two switch depending on their moods.

masochist: Gets off on receiving pain.

sadist: Gets off on giving pain. Some enjoy playing with a masochist who enjoys the pain. Others enjoy playing with someone who submits to the pain but does not necessarily enjoys the pain but they enjoy pleasing the sadist usually because he's also a MasterMistress or Dom/me.

babygirl/boy: enjoys ageplay with a Daddy/Mommy or enjoys being taken care of like a child by a daddy/mommy.

princess: enjoys being pampered

brat: enjoys playing games so they can be "punished" aka funishment

funishment: roleplaying and pretending one is being punished but it's all for fun and not for discipline purposes.

hhmm...I think I've covered the big ones everyone usually asks here.

littlewonder -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 6:21:01 PM)

skull fucking: ramming a cock into a person's throat very roughly, usually pushing their head violently into the cock or wrapping your hand around their hair and slamming the cock deep and hard.

LafayetteLady -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 6:24:59 PM)

So kind of just another term for throat fucking? Thanks.

My mental picture is still haunting me though, lol. I really don't know why someone shoving their head up someone else's ass immediately popped into my head!

littlewonder -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 6:28:17 PM)

haha

Now back in the early 90's at the beginning of internet bdsm on usenet, skullfucking was fucking a hole drilled in the skull and that's where the term squick came from...the sound of the skull being fucked. [8D]

True story.

Just because you seem to be enjoying playing kinky websters...would said skull be attached to a live being? Or is this what bleached skulls with holes in the side are REALLY for??

littlewonder -> RE: What's the difference? (2/7/2013 7:32:16 PM)

Back in those days it was still attached to the body. Like I said, back in usenet days that was what skullfucking was. But I guess I'll no longer answer questions. Thanks.

I think one only needs to look at the literal nature of the words. "Dom," as it has come to be, derives from short-handing the adjective "dominant" (powerful, influential, controlling, etc.). Dominant does not necessarily connote "master," however (the keeper of a slave). One word is not necessarily a BDSM term made by and for BDSM, whereas the other certainly is. In short, all men who dominate may be considered "doms," but not all doms are masters. Now you'll tend to notice some won't be happy with that delineation, no matter how sensible it is. Without a doubt, there is some semantic play room between the two terms, but if you want to know the simple difference between them, even if just theoretical, there you have it.

JeffBC -> RE: What's the difference? (2/8/2013 4:52:09 PM)

Except for the word "master" means many things in vanilla-speak... the master of a slave is simply one possible usage.

Even more concerningly, much as I would like to agree with you it just isn't that way. I see bottoms, subs, switches, and slaves all referring to "the male dominant partner" as "master". In common usage it appears to be synonymous with "top" and "dom"... .much like bottom, sub and slave are all ambiguous in common usage.

In the context of roles, a dom is one who dominates a person during a specific activity or timeframe and then they seperate. An example is a dom who is invited to show or practice his/her techniques on a submissive and then they seperate. Also in the context of roles, a master is one who dominates a person all the time. An example is me and my relationship to tammystarm 24/7.

I think context has everything to do with the appropriate usage of the word. In a place where master is commonly paired with slave, I think it's safe to focus on Oxford's first definition of the word: a man who has people working for him, esp. servants or slaves.

If a dude means to say he's just absolutely stellar with ropes, a qualifier would be recommended in a circle like this. For example: Shibari Master Pope LeRope.

True. But most people don't know the difference between the words further and farther, employing them interchangeably in common usage, too. That doesn't make said usage correct, however. I find no reason to abide by that practice simply because it's popular. I feel the same way about dom and master or sub and slave.
