Dude, take a deep breath and ask yourself this question. "Will gaining answers on the internet somehow assist me in my interactions with women in the real world?" If the answer is no, the question is probably not worth asking.

Dude, I'm a writer I'm asking the ladies this question because I'm thinking of making it a scene in my book I just don't want the main character to come off as a total creep to readers.

fast reply I voted 'weird' - I wouldn't go as far as disgusting. There are probably some situations in which this would come across well so it's not a firm answer. But I think in most situations it would make me a little uneasy and put me slightly on guard. A kiss, even on the hand, is more intimate that one would normally be with someone they just met. It isn't culturally normal to do this where I am from; in some parts of Europe the cheek/air kiss is part of the culture and so that wouldn't bother me in that context. I would feel you were either overly familiar, or that you liked to be showy and draw attention to yourself. It seems like a pretty flashy move to me and I might think you were a bit of an attention seeker if you did this outside of a ballroom in eighteenth century France.

I'm in my 50's, so that may play a part in this perception. A gentleman greets a lady with a kiss to her hand. Now, that means the lady has extended her hand - not to shake hands, but to be held and then lightly kissed. He does not grab her hand so he can kiss it. That's something different, perhaps more modern and flirty. So, as a writer, I guess it depends on your characters and what you mean for the gesture to convey. The attempt to kiss a hand which was extended to shake hands, may be quickly withdrawn showing conflict between the characters. You can play with it.

If I don't know you, don't do it. It makes you seem like a pompous fool who is slightly off in his social interactions. C does it from time to time, in a joking flirty manner, but that's entirely different.

As a writer, depends on the time period the "lady" is in. Personally I find it charming. An Englishman used me as an example on how he could get a woman swooning. He first kissed my hand, then the palm of the hand. Afterwards, he kissed my wrist. I was swooning...

~FRing it~ If you are thinking about adding it to your book, Id have to say that it would depend on the context of your story as to whether or not it was creepy. If your story takes place back in the day when men did that with women, it wouldnt be creepy at all. Or depending on how your story was going even if it was taking place in the present, it might not appear creepy either. For me, it really depends on your story more than anything else as far as whether or not adding this part would be a good idea or not. But if you are wanting to know my personal thoughts on it. I personally dont like. While Im not an out of control germophobe or anything, I know Id have this compelling need to go wash my hands after someone kissed them. Which probably is not the intended effect that said hand kissing man hopes to inspire in me [:)]
