I sympathize for anyone who received a call like the ones alleged. Yes, I understand "pay your bills" but why frighten people so bad and even go so far as to impersonate law enforcement?

Because it works. At least until it gets reported.

Debt collectors are the slime of the earth.

Holy Crap. I've heard about some bullying tactics before but the funeral one was beyond comprehension.

I thought that was what fin dommes were, lol. Seriously though, I had a debt collector once cuss me out. I said "ok, ok, I'll pay. Can you meet me at the store by my house?" Gave him a store to go to in the middle of the hood and didn't show up. Lol. Eventually I paid it bc well....I grew up and debt sucks. But it was funny at the time.

Got one bill paid off, who knows how many I got left but I have not receive any calls lately. I am trying to get started on my student loans but they made a mistake in their system...kept sending me notices in my old married name and I have been divorced for about 7 years. I get pissed if I receive any mail with the bastard's last name on it so it goes in the trash.

Debt collectors are the reason we got rid of our landline some time ago. We have one again, and we're contemplating getting rid of it again. They don't call for us, but we get so many for family and strangers. They pop out of nowhere and never stop.

I couldn't imagine doing that job. Some of them seem heartless, and maybe they can justify it, but I know it would wear me down. Most people don't enjoy being in default and are stressed enough as it is. I wouldn't want to be the person making another's life even more stressful.

On the other hand, when it gets reported, there can be serious repercussions. It's not like the state attorneys general lose any political points for going after these people.

The only one that surprised me was threatening to dig up the dead bodies.

The interesting thing about this is that not only are the debt collectors who use this kind of harassment exposing themselves to sanctions from the government, they are also exposing themselves to tort liability. And tort liability with punitive damages. I'd represent somebody who was subjected to this kind of behavior on a contingency basis in a heartbeat.

I wish a mofo would call me with that shit. I'd flip out and threaten to report them to the state. They hang up real fast when you do that.

My father had one that called him. Told him they were going to serve him papers at work and they were going to serve papers to me. (Even though he and I have never co-signed on anything) They left him three threatening voicemails in three days. Out of fear, he paid them even though he had no idea what they talking about. When he told me later that day, I contacted a lawyer. The lawyer called the debt collector, who evaded him and the lawyer advised my father to stop payment.

It turned out the debt didn't belong to my father. My father ended up getting a 5 figure settlement (The lawyer got 1/3).

I had a RE closing postponed and almost lost the deal because a debt collector had gotten a judgement against person A and then filed liens on properties owned by everyone in that county with a similar name.

I called and informed them that not only was this illegal but I sincerely hope he does it in my county and encumbers a property that I own because then I would OWN.....HIS............ASS.

He called the courthouse and pulled the lien.

One thing that is fun that I did is I went to Spencer's gifts. They have this recording thingie that is geared towards debt collectors, and there is like 30 different recording on it. I played it every time they called. Lol

Occasionally I keep getting calls for someone who has the same last name as me and the same first initial. Different towns, different addresses and they just call everyone in the phone book around with this name and initial. Really, how dumb is that. Do they really think people are going to pay her bills just to make the calls stop?

What's really annoying is that it's a computer recording, you can't even talk to a human being and tell them to go look one city over because the address they claim is hers is 20 miles away.

1. There are folks who will take a dollar today and not worry about the dollars they'll get sued for tomorrow.
2. If you run a debt collection outfit and hire minimum wage phoners and don't train them, this stuff will happen naturally.
