I'd recommend the OP (and any other mentally/chronically ill uninsured person in the US) look into whether she's eligible for a high-risk insurance pool. It'll be provided either through your state government or through the Federal government (http://www.pciplan.com/).
I'm on Maryland's plan, and honestly it's probably the best insurance I've had. I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, and send them stuff like a doctor's note certifying that I had a pre-existing condition out of a list they had, proof of X months state residency, a copy of the previous year's tax return (in MD the cost is sliding-scale), etc. So it was a bit of a hassle on the front end, but it's definitely been a big relief for me that I don't have to worry about whether I'll be able to get insurance or pay for my meds anymore.
