Does anybody else like to give pets unusual names?

Cats are such prissy regal critters, so I think they deserve to have dopey names. Now I have one named Shemp; have had others named Iggy and Zeke.

A friend had a dog named Dudley. I think that is a hell of a lot more amusing than Rover or Spot.

So, anyone else?

We had two stray kittens adopt us, part siamese and one had a black mask so we named them Smokey and the Bandit. Smokey (good kitty) is now 9, but Bandit disappeared after a few months with us. We also have Oscar (bad kitty).

One of my kitty's name is Nimue.

The first question I get when people hear her name is "What the heck does that mean?" It's fun.

My other kitty's name is Luna, which is unorigional, but she -wasn't- named for the moon. Rather, when I got her, her eyes were -exactly- the color of a luna moth's wings.

I personally know of a cocker spaniel named Tap Root, which I think is very strange.

My pug is named Szechuan Lo Mein and comes from a long line of Chinese menus-- Mu Shu Gai Pan, Won Ton Stickers and Hunan Egg Roll. I think if I ever get another I am just going to call her Combo Platter 4.

I don't have any pets now, but the cats I've had in the past, no matter what name they start out with invaribly wound up being called "kitty." Boring I know.

The dogs I've had- had names like: Pepper, Sparkle, Maggie, Kelly, and Mishigus- yiddish for troubled or crazy.

That's hilarious! Combo platter...
I once heard of a dog named Dumfries.
Sounded more like a camel name to Me....

Kids have a basset hound named Chester... (which is at their dads house now) i don't know where the name came from but a odd name for a Dog isn't it?

we have 2 Rats also -- Chrissy and Oreo -- guess we can all guess why one is named Oreo... but Chrissy is actually named after a cousin of mine, i bet she would be happy to know my daughter named a Pet Rat after her.

we didnt get real creative with the stray kitty that has adopted us... we just call her "Kitty"

this slave used to live in a mountainous, rural area and was in charge of keeping the 11 acres "fire-safe". to help out with the poison oak, stinging nettle and other nasties, she would obtain pairs of goats to work the hillsides. this slave decided to name them after "disco-era" recording artists...."Chaka Khan and Rufus", "K.C. and Sunshine", etc.
currently, we live in a big city and have only 2 (indoor)cats....as a Barry Manilow tribute, they are named "Lola" and "Rico".
this slave's brother used to have an old english sheepdog with the name "Lt. Colonel Beauregard Shagnasty"

I have a fish named Gefilte.

For those of you who may be less familiar, I've attached a picture of Gefilte Fish in its more usual configuration.

My son named the dog he got for his 4th birthday *George*. He still insists to this day (and he is now 18) it is a good name for a dog....

Ironcally, a few weeks ago Master found a dog named George was the only medal of honor winner that was not human. It was later taken away because people didn't like the idea of a dog getting an award that was suppose to be such a high honor for a person.

::laughing:: but, since my son wasn't even in school yet, I doubt he knew that strange little fact :)

My spouse names the dogs and I name the cats. We've had a Golden Retriever named Bear which was short for Theodore Aubert (Cajun name pronounced A-Bear). Now, we have a Black Lab named Ace (Ace In The Hole) and a 3/4 Black Lab (and something else really, really stubborn) named Tiger (Tiger Woods had just won a golf tournament). We've had three cats: Mr. Piggy, Buttons, and Spookie. Spookie was so named because he was so easily spooked. Should have seen him the first time he saw the ceiling fan on!

My Mom had a dog named Hoover, as he would eat anything left on the floor...to include, of course...non-consumeables.

As a child, I know we had a cat named George. His original name had been Tom-Tom the Atom Bomb but it was shortened to George.

Dogs I've known/had: Diogi (sound it out), Mighty Killer Fang (six pounds of fighting fury. NOT!), Tucker (named after the Australian term for dinner! We were going to call him Sojj, the Klingon term for food! he was 4 pounds.), Delsie, Splat and Kitty.

Rats I have known/had: Rattus, Dusty and J.J., Amber, Opal and Onyx (the Ratt Sisters), Plissken and Taylor, Star and Natalie Ratalie.

Squirrels I have known: Skip and Chatter, Nut and Shell, Whirly, Walter I and Walter II.

When my oldest daughter was 4 years old she wanted a kitten. i got her a goldfish instead to start out so she would learn the responsability of pet ownership. She gave the fish the name of 'Fluffy'. -- guess she STILL wanted the kitten instead.

i had a cat as a child that my mom named 'Meneu'. She says that was what her cries sounded like when she wanted to eat or be let out.

i have a Shih Tzu now, named 'PoohBear'. my youngest daughter, who will be 5 years old next month, named her that when we got the dog two years ago.
