Wow. Just wow.

I wouldn't wish that kind of incapacitating ill health on anyone. But Ratzinger had exceptionally big shoes to fill and hasn't done a stellar job. After John Paul II reinvigorated the Church and reached out to all sectors of the world, Benedict XVI dropped the ball. I tried to keep an open mind about someone who served in the German army during WWII, but the guy was a dud.

Speculative comments on the CNN article figure that he's got something degenerative that affects his ability to recognize reality, like Alzheimers.

The Church made an odd statement about how there will be a new Pope by Easter. Seeing as how he's resigning in February and Easter's in April, I would freaking EXPECT that they'd be able to elect a new Pope given weeks to do it.

Wow, I have to admit that I'm completely surprised by this. I can't say I'm disappointed (I'm Catholic, btw), though. I never really liked Benedict's reign...it seemed too insensitive and out-of-touch, even by the standards of the Papacy. Of course, growing up with JP2, one of the greatest of the Popes, it was always going to be hard for Benedict to follow in his shoes.

I don't think he really wanted to be pope to be honest. He just never seemed enthused about the position. I think people looked at him and expected him to be like Pope John Paul II. He just couldn't live up to that and he knew it.

It will be interesting to see who is chosen next. I know there is a cardinal in Africa and another in Latin America who were up for the running last time.
