Is there such a thing as a cheap throw away phone in the UK? It would help the kid keep in contact with her family and friends - and have the benefit of being able to play games on it.[:D]

There is, but I don't know that I'd feel right giving someone else's child a phone, since I don't know the family I don't know whether they'd feel ok about it. It's a nice idea though.

Athena, Would you mind sharing the organization that you do the charity pen pal through either here or privately. I was thinking that would be a wonderful thing to get myself and son into. He loves to write letters and do projects for people.

Great list. I would add a pillow and blanket. When I was in the hospital, I was freezing and hated their blankets and pillows.

I bet I could easily whip something up with a bunch of pockets that could hold things like books, phones, bottles of water...
