An American comedian whose name I don't remember (though it could have been Rich Hall) was being interviewed about his experience of being in England. When asked about something he found funny, his first choice was town-names. Especially, he said, town names that sounded like people 'doing something'. 'Dorking' (in Surrey, SE England) was one of his favourites.

Comment, with example(s) on similarly risible town names of which you are acquainted.

That's it - get on with it.

Oh come on. Seriously? I could Google to check, you know. Frigging hell, I don't think we've got *anything* to match any of those. Superb!!

Well, there is a hill - the highest in Cornwall, W. England - called Brown Willy.

Would you chortle at the town-name of 'Maidenhead'? A friend of mine lives there. He gets embarrassed by it when it gets mentioned on international forums.

There is a town here in Louisiana named "Waterproof". As a young child I remember the headline in the local paper that read "Waterproof man drowns". I also remember scratching my head and thinking "How?"
I know, I should be ashamed of myself.

Feel free to Google all those names...I've been to every one of those places. Now I'm not saying they are big cities[Turkey Scratch is about 10 minutes from me and might have 20 people living in it] and Toad Suck has a fairly large festival each year called Toad Suck Daze...I am not kidding. They got the name from the old steamboat days when boats would tie off and the captain and crew would refresh themselves at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the folks living nearby, who said: “They suck on the bottle ’til they swell up like toads.” Many of these towns have a tale to tell about how they were named.

well,.. a website has offered $$$ for the city of Sugarland (TX) to change its name to SugarDaddy... So far I guess not enough $$$ for the city to accept the kind offer however..

This isn't as bad as some of the others mentioned, but every time I hear about Gun Barrel City, TX, the thought crosses my mind that it's a dumb name for a city. It just doesn't sounds like a very welcoming place.

I looked it up in Wikipedia and there apparently is a reason behind the name:

The city takes its name from a former road, Gun Barrel Lane (which is now State Highway 198), as well as its motto, "We Shoot Straight with You" and its symbol - a rifle with two crossed antique pistols. Gun Barrel Lane got its name during the 1920s and '30s when outlaws frequented the area. It was considered a safe backwoods place during Prohibition when the likes of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker hung out in the area. A local resident, Mr. C. L. Wait, lived along the road and was known for sitting at the window of his house with a shotgun sticking out the window. It was his way of deterring those he deemed unwelcome on this back country road.

To each his own, I guess.

Another stupid town name: Bad Axe, Michigan

My family actually lived there for a short time before I was born (thank God!)

Again, in checking Wikipedia, there is a reason behind the name:

The city's unusual name dates to the time of its settlement. While surveying the first state road through the Huron County wilderness in 1861, Rudolph Papst and George Willis Pack made camp at the future site of the city and found a much-used and badly damaged axe. At Pack’s suggestion, Papst used the name “Bad Axe Camp” in the minutes of the survey and on a sign he placed along the main trail.

Again, not as bad as the others, but definitely dumb!

The favorite one that I've actually been in is Jumbo, Ohio. The name isn't ridiculous until you realize that Jumbo is about 5 houses that are along the side of a 2-lane state route (not a large road).
