PrincessOlivia38 -> Shibari (2/13/2013 9:15:09 AM)

Does anyone know of classes in the central Florida/east coast of Florida area? My Dom would like to learn and/or see a demonstration. Or even if you know someone that is into it. thx!

LadyPact -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 9:15:48 AM)

How far are you from the Woodshed?

PrincessOlivia38 -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 9:18:09 AM)

Not sure, where is the woodshed?

OsideGirl -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 9:19:53 AM)

I have found that Fet Life is the easiest way to find groups near you. Just enter the name of your area and you'll see a list. I understand that Florida has a pretty active scene, so I'm sure there is something.

PrincessOlivia38 -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 9:23:36 AM)

Oh, if thats in Orlando I'm about 45-60 minutes away

LadyPact -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 9:30:17 AM)

Would that be something (the hour away) that would be acceptable? If it is, that would be where I would suggest that you go. From what I hear, it's a nice spot and there are regular educational opportunities held.

Go to the Upcoming Events section here on the forums. Somebody associated with the Woodshed posts events regularly. I'm sure you can get contact information from there.

Best of luck to you, Olivia.

Thank you LadyPact

ResidentSadist -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 11:02:21 AM)

Lady Pact gave good advice about the Woodshed. Approximately 45 minutes in the other direction is the gang in St. Augustine. They are old enough and big enough to have developed sub groups by now and may have a rope group group. I haven't seen Big Daddy V (a local pillar of the community) lately but if you are on that coast, you may have friends that know the group up there.

Closer to you is the Daytona Munch that was recently revived. They are still small, fledgling and recovering from prior mismanagement so they haven't gotten to the point they will have sub groups and demos yet. Although small, I enjoyed my last visit with them and ran into a handful of old school Floridians that have been helping build the scene over the past 12 years. You might find a person not a group that will coach you in Shibari.

And lastly, there are some Shibari books in the book thread listed in my sig (if you don't own them all already).

Good luck and have fun my fellow Floridians.

Thank you ResidentSadist. Yes I am aware of the Daytona Munch, and was curious about it. Good info on checking out the groups in St Augustine too...

Esinem (who is on this site, but easier to get on fetlife) has a pretty good set of instructional DVDs out on Shibari, and you can while away hours learning that together.

Never understood Shibari. Too pretty. Not very functional. Lot's of time spent before unwrapping. Just sayin...

mnottertail -> RE: Shibari (2/13/2013 12:24:38 PM)

Hojojutsu.

It is functional.

Had to look that one up myself.

Hojojutsu

The traditional Japanese martial art of restraining a person using cord or rope.

samdarella -> RE: Shibari (2/16/2013 12:48:15 AM)

Definitely check out The Woodshed in Orlando. They have classes from beginners to weekend long intensive classes. Besides the classes there will be very experienced riggers there that love to share knowledge with people that truly want to learn. There is also the Phoenix Club in Largo (just outside Tampa). They have demos and classes also. You can also search groups on the other site. Good luck and have fun.

Not only do you not understand it, you haven't got a fucking clue about what you're talking about :-)

That's an overreaction. A female friend of mine once told me, "I stopped being so interested in shibari after I turned 40. The rope top would be halfway done, and it would be time for me to pee."

PrincessOlivia, I have also had positive experiences at the Woodshed, including a rope suspension class I attended there. I don't know anything about other groups in Florida, but ResidentSadist has a history of giving excellent advice here.

Personally, I own Shibari You Can Use, by Lee Harrington. Lots of photos, and there are ties you can perform right away.

DesFIP -> RE: Shibari (3/13/2013 4:27:23 PM)

Intellisubbear: Do you feel that way about Christmas presents? That the wrapping is nonfunctional and takes too long? For some of us, the wrapping is part of the fun. And we appreciate the pretty aspect of it.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Shibari (3/15/2013 7:14:46 AM)

And shibari doesn't have to be slow. I've seen experienced folks do some amazing work in a minute or less (Okienawa is a great presenter here in the Midwest who can do a lot of ties in a minute and under; lots of practice and drilling).
For some people it is all about decoration and being meticulous, and others get that done in no time. It really just depends on style and intention.

Then obviously that rope top didn't know shibari. Or your friend was ready to start doing diapers 24/7. Shibari, as in authentic Japanse bondage, takes very little time. You can drag it out as long as you like, but you can suspend someone in 5 minutes all the same. As I said, you have no clue.

avox -> RE: Shibari (3/27/2013 4:29:36 PM)

Shibari has always been a bit too ornate for me. All show, and no fun.
