DomKen -> Sierra Club president arrested (2/13/2013 4:02:13 PM)

The Sierra Club has long had a policy of not engaging in acts of civil disobedience. The groups president suspended that rule to protest the Keystone XL pipeline today.

I find it curious they decided to protest before the White House and NOT Congress. Last I checked, the President was on board with the pipeline for a pile of reasons. In fact, they should have gone and protested before Republican lawmaker's own offices. Those are the ones pushing for this pipeline!

Sounds as if you answered your implied question. No amount of demos will change the GOP's obedience to their biggest donors, but Obama is being pulled both ways, and one more pull might just possibly change things.

Exactly.

The nation's biggest and oldest environmental organization has both given up any hope of convincing elected Republicans of anything and is so concerned over climate change that they have taken a step completely unprecedented for them. Hopefully it does get the message across to all the non batshit insane.

I thought class was always in. Remember your lessons kinkroids. In America almost all life is in fact all about money.

That pipeline is all about profits, The oil could go to our Oklahoma refinery for our use. Think again.

With 100% of it exported from Houston, a federal 'free trade zone' whatever the hell that is...ALL of those profits are...tax free. What could be better in America's non-free, free market but a...tax free market.

Obama will do what he needs to do...to stay alive.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said since the Obama Administration has shown NO interest in buying Canadian oil, we will sell it to China. That is the reason the oil is going to China! Stupid ass, never ran a business Obama, is causing the loss of 20,000 high pay construction jobs, with the total job loss pegged at 100,000 by refusing to allow the pipeline. Oh, but the pollution scream the tree huggers!!! What the hell do you think the Chinese are going to do with that oil? They are going to BURN it! What difference does it make if it is used here or in china? We live in the same atmosphere as China, or is that too hard for a tree hugger to comprehend?

As far as a pipeline spill. A pipeline is MUCH easier to repair and control than a deep water blowout. Try and make up some more doomsday plots!

DomKen -> RE: Sierra Club president arrested (2/14/2013 1:09:07 PM)

They can't sell it to china without a pipeline to their west coast and BC has stopped that for at least the next several years.

The oil was always going to go to china. Whether it was shipped to the Gulf or not.

Also the cleanup of a minor spill of relatively clean oil is very expensive. Cleaning up a spill into the major aquifer of the upper plains with extremely dirty oil would probably be impossible. Which would you rather have food or a little cheaper gasoline?

I wonder just how Allison Chin got to DC. I guessing in a jet. What a bunch of hypocrits..

Hold on a minute... They put together their first act of public disobedience in 120 years, and they used plastic zip-ties to "handcuff" themselves to the fence?! o the fence?! [sm=doh.gif]

I'm sorry, but if you're going to make a statement like that, you need to go all in: I'm talking about miles of chains, titanium locks, multiple redundancy systems, etc. The kind of stuff that would take hours - perhaps days - to remove completely. If your protest can be ended with a pair of scissors, you're not doing it right... [:D]

For example, this suffrage protester had the right idea:
