I've seen a green fireball streak past, while driving home from work, repeatedly found myself stuck staring at the two tails of Hale-Bopp some years back, and hosted Perseid parties, back when I lived out in the country, but this is a whole other level of light in the sky!

The Science Channel has a feature scheduled for tonight (2/16) at 8:00 EST.

Here's a slow compilation of video, and video with audio of the boom.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4X5J0N-UDs

And here's a short attention span, or slow connection speed, version

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1Xyg804wzg

The last number I saw said about 1200 people were hurt by the results of the shock wave.

The second and third segments of this one give an idea of what happened indoors. Holy crap!

I heard about the russian meteor on the radio.
If you like comets, I think theres a new one which
will be entering the inner solar system some time
in 2014, it's apparently going to be the brightest
comet humans have seen in recorded history.

Owing to the fact it likely hasn't come into the
inner solar system before at all.

Combined with how close it will be coming to the
sun, theres even the added chance it could fly
apart/explode.

i didn't see any of the news on this, although i was on the phone at the time the news broke and was told about it by the person i was talking to. i am totally amazed at how calm everyone is as though this happens all the time. some didn't even bother to look up to see what was happening.

thanks for the links.

These scenes look a bit like indoors during earthquakes, like Loma Prieta. Thanks for posting these Youtube links!

I’ve seen two meteors of consequence… one was green and lit the sky but produced no sound. The other was blue and exploded into blue streaks with a small boom. I was in awe of the power and beauty.

One of these days we will not be so lucky. That is why I believe we are doomed to extinction unless we get off this target and spread the odds.

The news footage on this yesterday was awesome! From what I understand, most of the folks who were injured were the ones that saw the flash of light, went to look through a window, and the sonic boom is what got them.

This isn't the brightest thing I've ever said on the boards but yeah, I totally would have been guilty of doing that.

Me too, LP

Rich, thanks for the links, even though you hate to see people injured, it's fascinating stuff.

The next comet pass (known, anyway) is actually due late this year. It could be a once in civilization event, or it could be another little bright ball, that city dwellers would hardly notice.

I've seen stories that it will peak on Thanksgiving weekend, as well as this one, which puts it the day after Christmas, for closest approach.

Yer that one, that will be one awesome xmas
present.
The tail should develop long before it passes
through earths orbit which will make for months
of naked eye viewing.

If I understand it right both hemispheres will
get a good look, but the north will have a better
view of it coming in and if it makes it around the
sun, the southern hemisphere will get a good
show as it departs.

Can't wait!

Of course, there are also some less likely theories about what happened over Siberia floating around.

(Thanks, George)

This does happen all the time. The estimate is that a rock this size enters the atmosphere once a decade. It's just that it usually happens over some deserted spot on the ocean.

ya kinda proving my point though, it still isn't a regular enough thing. i live in the uk and have never seen anything like that in 40 years. if something lit the skies, or caused a shadow like that i would be looking up.....or going to the window with LP to have a look lol people didn't even change gait or look. what a thing to ignore.

i'd love to know what the people filming were actually saying too. i was also a little surprised at people that got film from cars. i'm really hoping it was a passenger doing the filming.

It seems dash cams are extremely common in Russia. In the long video, I'm curious about who it was, that started driving like a maniac, after it went by, and went boom.
