I just purchased a blu-ray player and signed up for Netflix to see House of Cards. I give the show two thumbs up, and the streaming from Netflix delivers a better HD picture than cable programming.

I'm curious if anyone can link to a good review of this series b/c I haven't found one yet.

The main theme is of the show is politics, but there are interesting sub themes:

(1) Drug Addiction

(2) Running an open marriage

(3) New Media v. Old Media

(4) Advanced People Skills help you get ahead, a lack thereof will be thy demise

(5) An aging guy becomes sexier as a Daddy Dom figure

(6) The tedious chore of drafting a bill

Great line for episode #4: "Friends make the worst enemies."

Hmm, no responses. I wonder if this is bad news for the Netflix. The stock of the company just about doubled in the last 60 days after its release of House of Cards, but if it bombs, that stock price will retreat in a hurry.

Anybody out there either watching the show or tracking to see how it does? Some think this show represents an important step in the demise of CABLE and SATELITE TV. Forecasters see ala-carte TV offerings instead of bundled services.

It was filmed in Baltimore, which makes me want to watch it...however, I'm not a Netflix subscriber, and I'm not inclined to sign up just for this. It'll be re-run on FX in another year.

I haven't seen this yet, but if you liked it i suggest you search Netflix for the original BBC series which starred Ian Richardson and was really good. Only thing for a US audience is that it is based around the British Parliamentary system so it is not something that most would be familiar with. Nevertheless it is well worth watching.

That is a hurdle. I had to sign up myself. Before doing so, I'd never streamed a TV show. After buying a blu-ray player and synching it to my internet connection, I've now tapped into the ease and convenience of streaming. Wiith Netflix, unlike cable, you only pay for what you use.

I can tell you I didn't want to make this commitment, but now that I've done it --- there's no looking back. It was all super-easy to set up. All you need is a blu-ray player, HDMI cable, and an internet connection and you are off and running in minutes.

The way APPLE changed music with the IPOD and music downloads -- that model is now coming to TV.

Some things don't fit the model like live, sports programming, but pretty much everything else does.

I can get pretty much whatever I want without having to subscribe to Netflix or any other subscription service.

As for a BluRay player...
They don't have anywhere near as many releases as a standard or Hi-Res DVD and to be honest, unless you have a stupidly huge UHDTV it isn't worth the money it costs to buy it.
On another forum I visit, there have been many complaints that the BluRay versions of older movies, although better definition with better digital colour and effects, are actually spoiled by the additional CGI that tends to with it.

And I wasn't overly keen on House of Cards when it first came out either.
I won't even bother wasting the download time or the hard drive space to save it.

And judging by the uptake of cable and satellite service over here, there certainly isn't any sign of a demise at all.
I also don't think the forecasters are right for the a-la-carte services either as they aren't very popular here - mainly due to the expense of them.
There has been a drive to promote the YouView box but it doesn't have that many takers as yet.

I'll stick to my downloads for movies and the iPlayer etc for my TV pleasure thanks.
I won't waste my money on the likes of Netflix or BluRay just yet.

My brother has a Bull-ray. After seeing one movie, I decided NOT to get one.

Here is the deal. I'm petting the cat, Stashi, on my lap. On TV some bunch of guys open up on the guys wearing the wrong uniform. OF COURSE the Blu-ray turned the volume ALL THE WAY UP. The cat bolted, leaving a dozen pinholes in my leg and demonstrating the volume fuckup was not imaginary. Kevin reached over and turned the TV down. Then folks stopped shooting. OF COURSE the Blu-ray turned the volume back to WHERE IT BELONGS. But the TV volume dial had been turned down. So Kevin reached over and turned it back up. It was by now clear to me why he was sitting so close to the TV.

Now, does anyone suppose I should defer to a DVD player to set the volume for me? And if so, shouldn't the DVD Player set the volume and LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE?

Kevin assures me there is no way to stop it. Can someone show me that ain't so?

That's right now, but those DVDs will soon go the way of CDs and LPs. It's just a matter of time.

My blu-ray player does not control the volume on my TV set, so I've not had that problem.

Ok, I was under the impression that this was going to be a post about House of Cards. As to the BluRay issue, that is unique to the devices you own. Simply put, one of them is broken. No device on earth is designed to raise and lower volume on its own. Perhaps your system has some sort of normalizing function but it doesnt sound as if that is the case here.

As for House of Cards, I recently watched the series and here are my thoughts...

At first glance, we see what appears on the surface to be another run-of-the-mill drama. We follow Minority Whip Frank Underwood, played by none other than Kevin Spacey, through what can only be described as a gauntlet of political maneuverings. Through this journey we not only see the type of keen political manipulator that Spacey's character has become over his lengthy career as a congressman, but also the treachery, deciet, and lies that form the foundation of our political system. The characters and relationships are complex, the dialogue is raw, and Spacey's monologues are nothing short of stellar. I would wholeheartedly recommend the series to anyone that enjoys stories of espionage, politics, sex, drugs, and power. On a side note, the underlying theme of the entire show, in my humble opinion, is the exploration of power/dominance. While it is not always sexual in nature, this show critically examines the dynamic between those in power and those that are subjugated.

Also ; I was a sonarman, and understand electronics fairly well. Well enough to diagnose and repair a sonar set in one minute. I understand that YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RIGHT. But. Every time the shooting started, the volume went to Max. Every time the shooting stopped, it went back to normal. There is no fault I can imagine that would only and always happen when a character on screen fired a gun.

How would a machine know when someone was shooting onscreen without a signal on the disc to tell it. Is the player watching the movie? Is the TV watching? Is the amp watching? No. It HAS to be intentional. Note that "Intentional" is quite different from "On it's own". Intentional does not happen at random, and neither does the fault/feature. "On it's own" would definitely be random.

I'm only asking because I am in the dark about it. And maybe someone knows how to turn it off. It is not because I can't troubleshoot.

We just finished episode six (6), and I'm liking it more and more. House Cards is like a political western without the rifles and six guns. Its nice to see warfare and personal battles fought in the civilized / real world as opposed to brain-dead action genre.

I also like that it features a high-functioning, unconventional, complicated marriage.

Pk so after seeing this post I had to go to my free tv website (pm me for a link since every time I post the damn thing the mods yank it and YES I fixed my pm's)
to see if it was there...booya yes it is! I think I'm on episode 8 of season 1 now.
Kevin Spacey is fucking SEXY in this series! And I don't mean that in a purely physical way either. I swear they wrote this series for him and his acting style because OMG he nails it!

Anyway, I'm happily addicted ;)

I just saw a little preview for it today while watching some stuff on netflix. pretty cool that netflix is making its own shows. it looks interesting, and i love kevin spacey anyway :)

I'm with you, Luci, I think he's terribly ebil, sexy hot in this. It's the only thing I've ever seen him in I like.

Granted, the show's a little far fetched in terms of the degree of the idiocy of some and the intrigue of others, but it fascinated the pants off of me, and I could not stop watching it, episode after episode. I give it a 10 thumbs up!
