Thanks for the well-wishes and for those who posted how they felt about munches.  Happy to see only one comment so far that said they weren't much fun, hopefully the one I'll find will be a good time lol [:D]

Had to check LA's link for the answer to why it's called a munch, and the same thing was said by a member in one of the previous links, so that's probably a reliable answer to the question [:D]

some new ones cannot be "out" about their exploration in BDSM, so it's encouraged that you wear regular street clothes and not wear any obvious collars, harnesses or saddles ~chuckles~

I have a chain that cubby can wear when we attend munches (he wears his collar 24/7 otherwise except in the shower)

some munches are held in restaurants who have banquet rooms or outdoor patios so we can speak freely without being overheard by vanilla folks. Even if we're in the open restaurant, though, it helps to talk in "code" or in small groups.  I think it must look funny that we have almost "musical chairs" when we meet at a coffee house locally. everyone tends to exchange seats every few minutes. (in this place the owners thing we're a computer club that meets in person and they don't think anything of our actions unless we were to disrupt other customers)

In a munch, we tend to substitute Top and Bottom from the other terms simply as code. and we don't discuss that edgy scene we saw last Saturday night. It's nice for newbies to see that we're real life human beings under all the protocols and posturing...

I wish you luck

The munch I have started going to is in a Pub, in the basement, entirely separate from the general public.  There are usually 30-50 people there, slowly trickling in and out over the course of the night.

It starts at 7, when everyone chats idly.  At about 8, there's always a topic which is led by someone, comments from the group made, questions answered, etc....

After that, it's mingling time, where everyone gets up and wanders around, greeting new people and old people, chatting about life, family, work, caning, who's whose newest toy, great scenes someone saw and such.

Quite often, there will be a vendor or two there, selling floggers, paddles, obscure toys and the like.

So all in all, very private, so everyone can be quite open, but still, casual dress and demeanor.

Yours,

benji

"Firsts" can be intimidating. when i first contemplated attending a munch i  became a member of the local yahoo group.  The Moderator made a short introduction, after which i was approached by a couple of established members to suggest a quick meet for coffee  in the days prior to the next munch.  One of the people i met prior to.the munch, met me outside to escort me in. It was kind of a built in ice breaker... they introduced me around....etc.  I thought it was a pretty good practice.

Good luck...and have fun  [:)]

Actually, the best munches I've been to have been in mall food courts.  The venue makes us pretty much anonymous, but anyone thinking of joining the munch need only take a near-by table to "eyeball" the group before making a decision.
