I would never kill a spider - they are wonderful creatures!

If it's a harmless one (as most are), gentley pick it up and throw it out in the back garden (yard).
If it's a poisonous one, trap it in a glass, slide a piece of card under the glass to capture it and do as above.

You can actually buy a spider trap these days which don't harm them and can be dealt with at arms length.

Certainly not a 2lb lump hammer.....Allow me to elaborate....

I had an irrational fear of spiders for a long time but one thing happened that changed my perspective on it.

A number of years ago I was redecorating/re building my bathroom, spent all day building a partition wall and boarding it out ready for plastering the following day. Early the next morning I wake up and as normal go the bathroom bleary eyed and half asleep, standing doing what we all do in the morning (although some may sit) I noticed a mahoosive spider crawling the newly built wall next to me, I'm not kidding this thing was huge, all hairy and fat bodied, my fear kicked in and I instinctively picked up the first thing to hand to hit it with, unfortunately the first thing happened to be a 2lb lump hammer, It mashed the spider and left a dirty big hole in my newly built wall. After that I swore to act more rationally around our arachnid friends, not because I like them but because its a lot less effort!

Lol. Then you must have met my dog. It's quite alright. If that's what it takes so be it, its all for the greater good!

You've missed the classic piece of cruelty to invertebrates: the gas chamber improvised with a glass, newspaper and cigarette smoke...

My niece is an extreme arachnophobia sufferer.

She was playing with her son Damian this morning and saw a spider on the wall.

She grabbed Damian, went across the couch and stopped at the far side of the living room.

The spider was about the size of the eraser on a No. 2 pencil.

When I told her to get me something to kill it, she climbed back over the couch, side stepped into the kitchen never taking her eyes off the spider, and returned with a cast iron 14x14 inch flat griddle that feels like it weighs in the neighborhood of 4 pounds.

I used one of Damian's shoes to kill the creature.

I actually cannot wait till spring and summer, we have rather large prairie spiders that has a two to three inch leg span.

Summers are always fun... the shear terror that she displays when she sees the "mutant spiders from hell" is priceless. I just wish I had the public part of the house wired with micro cams so I could get all the fun on the computer and put it on youtube.

Well, my spiders are killed either by my cats (though they get lazy these days....in the past they were better in eating them, these days they touch them until they are rolled together - the spider not the cat - and then look at me as if they are saying "and now???") or my boyfriend....

actually when we started dating he was a bit disgusted about the many cobwebs in my bedroom....he said he felt a bit like in a zombie world with those cob webs....so one day when we got back home he got active and removed them, flushing them down the toilet....those cob webs I did not even mind, cause they were tiny spiders and they were on the opposit end of my bedroom (not above my bed)....I even told him "its art", following which he said "so when I shit in your hallway, its art, too, right???"[8|]

I have a horrible fear of spiders and it's no joke. I realize it's a bit extreme and irrational, but I have little control over it.
My husband used to give me grief about it, but he learned. He shows me its squashed body in the tissue without me asking because he knows I won't sleep otherwise.
I'm not going into the full extent of my phobia because I would sound extremely neurotic.

It's been better over the past few years. Here, they're larger than I'm used to (I thought one was a tarantula at first) but thankfully they seem to stay put in the basement for the most part. So, I stay out of the basement. Where I'm from, they always seem to be out and about anywhere and any time. Out of sight, usually out of mind.

If it is of the poisonous variety, go for the big can of Raid.[>:]
Having seen what a fiddle-back can do to a grown human, even i will kill certain spiders.

Now, if i know the spider is not a hazard, it can stay if it can survive the cats. [:)]

soul2share -> RE: The best ways to kill a spider. (2/20/2013 8:29:37 PM)

Shy, I hate bugs in general and spiders specifically. For me, killing a spider with oh, say, a hand grenade is effective......not good for the house, but the spider is D-E-A-D! If they stay outside in their environment, fine, I'll live and let live....but stray inside the house, and if the 5 cats don't get 'em, then I will!

As for you sounding neurotic, well, hell, join the rest of us! :)

Yes, a grenade would work nicely!
Bugs may be all sorts of wonderful (to other people), but trespassers will be hurt and that includes insects. I don't discriminate. [;)]

And, I am seeing there are a few fellow crazies around here so I'm feeling right at home!

Rasnow -> RE: The best ways to kill a spider. (2/24/2013 1:29:40 AM)

Drown it in hairspray
