$119 for something you can read for FREE???

I use e-reader software that makes the e-books/epubs and PDF's even look like books and paper.
The pages even turn just like a paper book.
I can even make turning the pages sound like a real book!

And of course, I don't need any extra light.
I can adjust the background to any colour, texture or brightness I care to choose.
I can change the size, font and colour of the text being displayed.
I assume you meant 2GB of storage rather than just 2KB?
I have well over 5,000GB (11TB) for storage - I don't need 'cloud'.
For cloud, you need to be online - I don't have to be online for mine.
I can increase my storage capacity almost ad-infinitum - you can't do that with cloud or small e-readers.
I don't need any dedicated hardware to use it.
I'm not likely to drop it or damage it in any way and it's not easily stolen.
I can do lots of other things apart from reading ebooks.
I can read all sorts of different formats - not just ebooks or epubs.

I don't need an account anywhere.
I don't need to give anyone my credit card details.
I'm not tied to any particular company or website. [sm=ballchain.gif]
Oh, and did I mention it was FREE??

I think kindles, nooks and similar things are for those with more money than sense.
It's a novelty thing like an executive desk toy that has no real purpose.
And like all those novelty toys, it's a show-off snobbery item with extremely limited use.

The kindle fire is much more then a reader. I got it so I could download games for my daughter, plus the wi fi access makes it the same as a table or I pad only much cheaper.

I do not keep my credit card on amazon not that I am paranoid about it. I find the buy with one click very easy, it's so easy my daughter accidentally bought stuff. Hey her game asked her if she wanted to but something and she did not even think as she said of course. Instead of making a 7 year old try and determine if a game is asking about real money or not I just deleted my card.

One thing to note is that by June, there will likely be new models/features out.

I've borrowed a NOOK, and I've had a Kindle Fire for about 10 months. I read a lot as part of my work, and the Kindle has been fine. Easier on the eyes, convenient for editing, and it is a fine music player with the addition of some decent headphones.

I also noticed that Amazon has started offering E-textbooks as rentals for as low as 7 or 8 dollars.

Mom and I are going through my library and so far, I got 4 walmart bags for either selling or donating. One of the bags is by a popular New Age author and my plan is to sell them (I know that her books will sell...it is almost a complete collection). We are keeping the Gregorys', Smalls', McCaffreys' and a few other authors. This way, we can get the books out of Grandma's old house and organize them (I want to reread Auel again).

My question is that I want to get an e-reader. A basic Kindle would be nice but I don't know the capacity of it and I know I don't want wifi on it. Just something so I can get Gor books downloaded on it and read them without reloading my bookshelves. I have not even looked at other brands and just want to know the best bang for the buck.

Please hurry...my birthday is in June and I have hinted to my daughter that this is what I want...*evil chuckles of laughter*

I'll never buy textbooks for $400 again! Whoo hoo!!!

DesFIP -> RE: e-readers (2/25/2013 1:48:55 PM)

You need wifi to download but they all come with that standard.
I have the original kindle, $79 plus whatever the cover cost, maybe $30? You want the protective cover/case so when you drop it, you don't break the screen.

I have no idea how many books it can hold. I think mine has about 150 - 180 by now. My daughter's holds well over 300, she got it the year prior to me. Books are about half price buying a paper one. But you need to watch what you're buying. Even the daily deals at .99 or 1.99 add up quickly. I buy a lot of first books for free and really try to hold the serious purchases to once every couple of weeks.

Just googled it, the kindle 3 holds up to 3,500 books plus you can archive them to make more space. And if your kindle breaks, when you register the replacement, it automatically redownloads all those books you've bought.

should the desire arise, to highlight passages in a scholarly volume.

You can highlight in Kindle.

In neon yellow? It has to be neon yellow, or it is not really highlighting you know, that is the fourth universal law of creation.

And since I have seen no evidence of a programing change in the program that formed creation, that universal law has not changed.

What colours would you like Jeff???

Obviously neon yellow.
What about in-yer-face neon pink?
Or a super-bright cyan or lime green??

I only have a choice of 65million colours so I'm a bit limited [:D]

DesFIP -> RE: e-readers (2/25/2013 2:18:18 PM)

But he's right. All true high lights are in neon yellow.

To be an officially sanctioned highlight, is has to be, by interstellar law, neon yellow.

As much as in-yer-face neon pink burns my retina and makes me wanna [:'(], I tend to agree.

So......... neon yellow it is!!

I have computers.  I have Kindles.  I use the computer for going online.  I use the Kindle for reading.

I'm on the computer all day long so went with the easier-on-the-eye Kindle in the 9.7" DX, for which I have two complaints:

1. It took me a while to learn how to fall asleep without dropping it on my nose.
2. Amazon has apparently stopped making it.

I read quickly and like not having to turn pages as often as I would with the smaller Kindles. Additionally, it feels more like reading a normal sized book. I just love how I never lose my place anymore when I fall asleep reading!

I have chemical sensitivities and am unable to read older, musty books - not an issue with ebooks. I belong to three library systems and have access to tons of free books.

DrkJourney -> RE: e-readers (2/25/2013 5:04:46 PM)

Me personally, I have the Galaxy note 10.1 and I love it. I can use any e-reader that I choose, nook, kindle, etc. I also found that if I have books on my computer I can easily download them onto my tablet and it holds quite a bit, and I have a lot of "adult" fare on it...lol

It sure saves tons of space. I will be moving in a couple of months and not having to lug all those heavy books around is great, plus I backed up everything on a flash drive.

Except for what someone mentioned earlier, the falling asleep and it boinking you on the nose thing, I love technology...lol

ShaharThorne -> RE: e-readers (2/25/2013 5:28:15 PM)

I always lay on my side to read, with my head propped up. Strange, I know...I am trying to hint to Mom that I need a trapeze bar installed over the bed so I can pull myself up when I am in pain (fuck you, fucking bitch, fucking fibromyalgia).

I am listing a few more books tomorrow, making more room for the 3 books I ordered (I cannot RESIST McCaffrey) and when the yard dries up, moving the rest of my collections into my room. They are being stored in the old guesthouse that my grandma lived in before she died.

Mom has a card for the library but we can only check out 10 books at a time. She can go through 10 books in a week. Most of the books that I am selling is what I brought for her at garage sales and on ebay (I am known on the mail route for having large boxes being delivered).

When we were organizing the tall case the other day, she came across the Koran that I brought (I am very spiritual, just don't subscribe to any formal religion) and I told her it iss in English as well as Arabic (she is SB). She even thought my large print bible was hers...(Mom does not have one...)

She has not hit the case where I keep the crochet patterns...

I have a suggestion, it wont cure the fibromyalgia, but it might make it more tolerable....

I will see if I can get you a few dozen quarts of my family's private stock...

Take one shot every hour after you get up in the morning....

Oh, the family private stock runs about 195-198 proof.

I believe that we live some distance from each other.... Besides if you look here you will see what I consider the optimal breast size, you have often said you are well blessed in the chest area.

DesFIP -> RE: e-readers (2/26/2013 7:13:23 PM)

Come on Jeff, you couldn't take one for the team?

Prior to my kindle, I read online. The kindle is much easier on these old eyes. My daughter has synced all her devices. Yes, she can read on her phone or ipod or laptop but the kindle is more portable than a laptop and shows more of a page at a time than the iphone.

Reading on a computer screen is known to interfere with sleep patterns. The nonbacklit kindle doesn't do that. And since it's now charged, I shall go back to my book.

Night all.

ShaharThorne -> RE: e-readers (2/27/2013 10:29:38 AM)

Someone just put a Kindle Keyboard on ebay at a good price with the cover, USB cord and adapter. I looked on Amazon and it is half price and the owner is just too busy to keep it (I know how she feels). I went ahead and got it.

Mom is so going to kill me...

thishereboi -> RE: e-readers (2/27/2013 12:37:05 PM)

I like books. I like the feel of them and love curling up somewhere with a good book. When I am studying, I usually have several spread out and could never imagine a e-reader being able to do the same thing. That said, I got a kindle fire for christmas the year before last and I love it. I love the apps and my favorite is Andoku which is a sudoku game. When my computer went down for a couple of weeks, I was able to check my email and still do limited browsing. I also like being able to borrow books from the library without actually going there. I also like being able to read in the dark with the lighted screen. I still buy books but also buy e-books from time to time. As someone who used to say she would never own one, I am finding it quite useful.

kallisto -> RE: e-readers (2/27/2013 3:53:01 PM)

I just loaded my Kindle Fire with several books to take on the plane with me to Detroit tomorrow. I love not having to worry with anything but my purse as my Kindle fits right in there. Suitcase is packed with everything warm I could find. [8D] I didn't think I would like the Kindle .. you know a "books" kind of girl, but I really do love the convenience of it and it's easy to read.

I was the same way. Now, it goes everywhere with me. It's so wonderful to be on vacation and not have to take up suitcase space or pay for overweight luggage by dragging my books with me.

ShaharThorne -> RE: e-readers (2/27/2013 7:07:58 PM)

I remember paying freight to fly my collection from South Korea to home.

Now I know I can get the classics for free, the Gor books for $7.95 and several other authors for my Tudor studies. It can hold 3,500 books...with the ability to get audiobooks downloaded.
