I rarely eat out.

However, tonight I decided to surprise my son and take him out to dinner. He got a slice of pizza and I got a greek salad. He was so thrilled we haven't ordered pizza in months. When I went to pay, he pulled out his wallet. Granted he didn't have the cash for dinner but he pulled out his 2 dollar bills and said "I pay." I told him this was my treat and thanked him for being such a gentleman. It was the sweetest thing.

Then as we were walking out several women where coming in and he stood and held the door open for them.

It was very sweet.
We have our moments due to his disability but he tries really hard to be polite and a gentleman but it still makes me grin.

He hasn't had pizza other than Naan Pizza since May.
So he was really surprised.

That's adorable.

I've been working with disabled children in the school system now for my third clinical internship, and it's been really eye-opening. I'm sure that sounds trite, but it's rocked my world.
Congrats on doing a great job with your son.

It is good to see manners being taught.

Now may I suggest you get him into roping, bronc riding, bull riding, bull dogging, roping, and driving real fast... you know the really important things a boy should know.

lizi,

Thank you.
It was one of the had to brag moments for me.

It doesn't sound trite at all. I personally find the special needs programs in public schools heart wrenching.

I was blessed when I went to college, my teaching degree focused on special needs children. Little did I know that it would come in handy on such a personal level.

Oh hell no!
See with his disability (he's autistic and on the extreme end of the spectrum) he would try and rope me or someone else just because he didn't see the difference. Lol

And... I have seen him driving a go-cart. The idea of him driving a car. YIKES.

I did not know he was autistic, so I apologize for my statement, it was most definitely out of line.

I have an autistic nephew with other developmental problems, so I understand.

I also have a friend that was diagnosed as severely autistic as a child and he is now a research chemist at BASF. He is now considered to have a different form of autism, I will not attempt to name it, since my spelling sometimes challenges the spell check in fire fox. All I know is that he is high functioning and very successful, he has a few patents to his name.

I do not know how they thought he was a severe case, hell I could not tell he was autistic at all.

No worries, you didn't know and I didn't take your statement as being out of line. I thought the ideas where cute.

Even when people know he is autistic I don't assume they understand what that means or specifically what it means to him.

He has come leaps and bounds over the past few years, but he is still on the extreme end of the spectrum.

How old is he? I have a 10 year autistic nephew (mid spectrum) who is the most delightful, charming, smart, adorable, mischievious, thoughtful and beautiful little boy in the world. His smile literally lights up a room.

Good for you; children as such a blessing. While I do not have children, I am blessed to have him in my life.

He is 15.
He is so smart and the tries so hard. He's almost totally non-verbal so you have to listen carefully when he does talk. He is sweet and innocent. His laugh it's the best sound in the world and his hugs. He hugs you and pats your back and says, "hug hug."

His behavior is better than what it used to be but because he can't vocalize his emotions he tends to act out physically to express himself and mimics everything.

ETA: He was 7 when he talked for the 1st time. It was on halloween he was trick or treating suddenly he said, "thank you." You could barely understand him but he said it at every house and every time he said, I started to bawl.

I understand. My nephew's biggest issue is non verbal, but he tries so hard and is getting better.

His brain is so fast so he gets frustrated when he cannot make his wishes known.

They are special children, in more ways than one.

My nephew was non verbal up till he was 15, and then only to get my sister's attention or to say thank you. He is in a halfway house now, and has begun to speak to the attendants there.

He is a great kid, though for some reason he seems a bit timid around me, but then I really havent interacted with him over the years. My sis brought him to my mom's funeral, which I thought was a bad idea, but he handled it quite well.
