Soon libraries and books with pages will become harder and harder to come by,

I have a deep fear that will happen. I was going to get rid of a bunch books a few months ago and decided against it. My grand kids or their kids may grow up not even remembering what a book looks like. I not only kept every single one of my books, but I asked my sister to put my mother's books into storage. I also grab whatever books I can find in discount bins, even if I may never read them. I do have 4 novels downloaded on my smartphone, but haven't gotten around to reading them, there is just something that seems obscene to me about reading a book digitally.

I, too, could easily get rid of my personal cell phone. However, I like knowing that my sister has one. She is a single, disabled woman living alone with a small child, works nights and is often on the streets late by herself. Her car is also not the most reliable. In case of an emergency, help is just a phone call away. She paid for the phone, but I pay her monthly bill. Quite honestly she uses her cellphone more often than I use mine.

I seldom go out to eat unless I have a coupon or a gift card. I work an odd 2nd shift anyway of 1-9 where by the time I get off work, its too late to go out for dinner and too early to go out for a "late night meal".

I dislike spending a lot of money on clothes. Or rather, I like dislike spending a lot of money of one piece of clothing. I went shopping yesterday, went into a Christopher and Banks for the first time ever and almost walked out when I saw some the prices. And then I found sales racks. I bought a bunch of blouses that were originally priced at $44.95-$49.95 each and spent a total of $29.96. Filled a shopping bag. The only thing I ever buy that price is almost not a concern is shoes. I have short, wide feet, uneven arches and deep callouses. There is 1 shoe store in my city that is very good at measuring my feet each time I go in, finding just the right shoe (I love New Balance and Sass) ensuring that the shoe base supports my entire foot (many shoe stores don't do this they are and I have been satisfied in the past that my foot fit into the shoe). I can buy shoes "off the rack" or even at lower priced shoe stores. Even places like "Finish Line" etc., don't provide the type of service or fit that I have found.

I've lived without many luxuries most of my life, especially those of the technological kind. I've yet to own a microwave, and don't see that changing any time in the near future. I got my first cell phone (a very simple one) last year, and only used it for a couple of months I got my first computer (an old hand-me-down) about 12 years ago and it took me a long time to get used to it. I truly fell in love with it during the time I spent recently getting my Vet Tech degree, as it made research for papers, and writing them up (incuding power points, which I had NEVER done), phenomenally quick and easy.

Most stuff I can live easily without. I am one of those simple-minded folks that considers necessities to include food, shelter, water, heat and air. Anything above that's a bonus and luxury to me. I must admit, tho' I've gotten terribly fond, and dependent upon, my computer, especially during long periods of injury, illness and healing. In that regard, it is a Godsend.

Yes but do you have alternative sources of Electricity?

There is something I can live without, rap and hip hop noise.

The idea for this actually came from another thread.

Many of the items in our day-to-day world truly are luxuries, but we think our world will cease to exist if we were made to live without them. I'd bet with practice we could find live just as enjoyable and satisfying, if not more so, without all these things.

In our fast paced world, one can barely go anyplace without one's cellphone, I pad, I pod, Tablet or some other device to ensure we stay connected to the world.

Many know that I bought a new car a year ago. What most don't know is that I traded in a fully loaded 2000 Saturn (I even had a remote start) for a stripped down 2012 Toyota Yaris that doesn't even have power windows. A year ago, on cold winter mornings, I was able to point the remote out the window and start the car to warm it and begin melting the snow and ice off the windows a few minutes before I was ready to leave the house. This winter I had to trudge through the snow, clean the door windows before I could even open the doors or else the entire interior of the car would be full of snow. Power locks? forget it. I don't know how many times my locks froze this winter.

I thought I'd die without all those luxuries.

I LOVE my Yaris!!

Other things we think we can't do without:

The internet. My recent absence from this site was due to a self-imposed disconnect. My agency is beginning computerized reporting and I'm on the computer far too much, so I took a break from it and did some real living for a change. I'm going to do more and more of that in the future.

Cable/Satellite TV. I spent several years with only local channels. These days I have satellite TV, but no major movie channels. And honestly, I've thought about having it turned off, but I am under contract and I have been advised by my payee not to violate that contract if I want my credit rating to improve.

Cell phones. I went for years without one of these as well. Actually, I went for about 2 years when I was very poor and fighting for SSI without even a land line. These days I carry 2 cells--my work phone and my personal. I have my work phone on me at all times. My personal phone is a luxury item in the truest sense of the word and I will often leave the house without it. I have 3 phones on my account--my own, my son's and my sister's, which I pay for because I feel safer with her having a cell phone and she can't afford one of her own. Carrying her on my account was not that much more than I was paying for just my son and I.

Notebooks, Tablets and other electronic devices. I have wanted these items in the past and have come to realize that I really have no desire to be that connected to the internet world. I'll spend my money on something far more worthwhile, thank you very much.

What are some of the things you guys use, think you can't live without or have found that you can in fact do without in your daily lives despite their popularity?

Yeah but, with a Yaris, you don't need automatic start....simply pick it up by the door handle when you get home and put it next to the cat.

It'll be nice and warm in the morning.

I look at the OP's question in a different way. What luxuries did you go without for so long and now wouldn't give up. Air in my car would be the first as I drove a honda civic for 17 years without it..

Electricity is nice, no doubt, but I lived without it for 9 years in north central PA. I had a propane gas stove, a wood stove for heat, and used candles and oil lamps for light.

You'll get no argument from me about rap, hip hop and anything loud and dissonant!

Having spent long periods of time in my life, very very poor.......there is very little of the luxuries I love that I know I cannot live without.

At various times I've been without any sort of phone, electricity, central heating, air conditioning is something I've just become accustomed to in the last decade. As a child I remember having to heat water on the stove to bath. I also remember going long periods of time without a television in the house.

Most of these things I have now. We do not have any cable or dish television. Just DVDs and VHS tapes.

Can't live without a/c - in Arkansas which if you have been here is pretty self explanatory.
Can't live without my kindle. My Sweetie bought it for me - and i found out that i loved it. I was a bit dubious at first, but the convenience is fabulous. I still have a bunch of books, but i love the idea that i can take hundreds of books with me in one small tablet.

TV - i could easily give up.
Same with the cellphone - but i have to have one for work. I just hate that people think i should be reachable 24/7, and get testy when i don't answer the phone.

Apart from my pets, there isn't a lot i couldn't live without - but Lord, there is a lot that i wouldn't want to live without.
And while i save for retirement, i haven't stopped living, because i could die tomorrow.......

I can't go without internet (this includes my iphone). It's my livelihood. It's what I do for work. It's also how I pay my bills and keep in contact with my family including my daughter and Master. I also use my phone to do homework while I'm out and not near my computer. I use it for work stuff. Without it, I don't think I could survive.

I don't have a car, never had one so no big deal to me. I can't really think of anything else I couldn't live without. I'm a minimalist so what a lot of people own, I probably don't because I just don't find a need for it in my life. I have cable tv but I rarely really watch it. It's usually just background noise. I've actually thought about having it taken out recently.

Ok, I couldn't do without heat. I did that being poor as a kid and I just can't go through that again. Now if I lived in a warm climate all year round, I wouldn't care. But I don't. It snows and gets really cold. I literally could not survive without it.

I can do without the mailman. I could do without most electrical appliances. HHhhmm....

Yeah...heat and the internet. That's about it.

oh and water and a working toilet. I remember growing up and living without either of those at times. I cannot ever go without those either. I like taking showers and being hydrated. I like being able to poop without flies circling all around me and gnats biting me the entire time.

Indeed! I thought of this after I'd already posted. That is something I will NOT do without

Does coffee count as something you cant live without?

I mean I have a 32oz coffee mug... if it is not filled and drank at least 4 times a day, my body seems to have some sort of reaction that is not pleasant.

I was born into the lap of luxury everything I have I deserve because I was born pure perfection. I'm not going to give up any of my essentials just to please society's terms of what is and what is not needed. Everything in my life is needed and its not up to another to decide what is best for me. No one has a vote about what I have or what I do in my life.

i should think i can do without everything except shelter, clean water, and a place to burn stuff and provide heat. the rest is all superficial, but it's stuff i have that i worked hard to get. unless it's an absolute no choice thing then i'm not willing to give up anything. i don't pay for extra tv channels, and for as much as i do watch i could do without the tv easily as it's usually just making noise in the corner. i do like music so would keep my mp3 player.

i do have a car now, but that has only been in the last eighteen months. before that i had no car, and before that i had a partner that drove me wherever i needed to be. the independance having my won car has given me is amazing and i wouldn't want to give that up in a hurry. i've had a car with aircon and wasn't impressed. i'd rather have the windows down.

i have a combi boiler for central heating and hot running water. chances are that when i move the house won't have that but will have a conventional tank boiler for water. that will be a pain to go back to, but i have done it before. as a child i lived without central heating, and i remember waking up in the morning to ice on the inside of the windows. i don't remember being cold as a child, but i know how cold my house gets now with no heating. it's not pleasent but i could do it.

Needs: Internet, meds, food, books

Wants: Books, e-reader

Gots: DVDs, MP3 player, CDs, books, Internet, satellite

No movie channel unless it is a preview channel, get the bread at a bread store. I use the internet to track storms and to keep up with people and gaming. I sell books off and on on ebay. I buy musical instruments for Lizard and other members of the family.

Definite need: Dark chocolate.

I agree with all the needs but add coffee, shelter, family and dogs.

For wants drop the e-reader.

Gots: Internet, cable, mp3's

I cant believe that no one has even mentioned family... what is everyone a bunch of hermits with no living relatives or they were created in test tubes and grown from and embryo to infant in a large container of synthetic embryonic fluid?

Anyone who lived through 3 to 4 weeks without power/phone/net(hurricane Sandy) learned a hard lesson in what`s most important.

Almost everyone I chatted with during that time felt as I did, that we(the 1st world) were at the top of the food-chain and enjoyed a vastly better/healthier/happier life than most of the rest of the world.

Great thread,btw.

Because the question was "What are some of the things you guys use, think you can't live without or have found that you can in fact do without in your daily lives despite their popularity?"

I didn't read that as meaning family, or people in general, at all.

I started simplifying my life a long time ago. I drive an old car, don't have cable, only use a cell phone when I travel.

There are many luxuries, like the internet, I could easily do without. Though if you took away tea, or books, or music, you'd have a fight on your hands.

I can't say I'm a minimalist, since I tend to be a collector of those things I love. I am a huge recycler of everything - if I can buy it used most times I do, and I donate what I no longer use.

And I can relate to the storm victims, when you have to do without it for a few days or weeks, you learn what is really important.
