As liberal as I may appear to be, I am actually in favor of this. I don't see this is a grand violation of civil liberties, (much like many portions of the Patriot Act), as whomever is being searched by this machine is about to board an airplane. They are fully aware that they will need to pass through a security checkpoint. Hopefully, these xray doo-hickeys (A very scientological term, btw) will make the airports, (And hopefully rail and bus stations) more secure.

Well, I dislike it because of the random picking of people. In my case it's not so random. When you have more than one piece of jewelry on your face, you almost always get picked. It always happens to me. I just want to know if jewelry shows on the exray as well. I really don't want the airport workers to know my hood is pierced. Even worse, what if they couldn't tell what it was and wanted to search me.
Maybe if it wasn't random. I've never really understood the point of that. I don't care what anyone says, in my personal experiance it's not been. So how do you get around that? Send someone who isn't likely to be stopped.

Most people on this board won't have to worry, since the machine in question is in use in London, our machines here are less sensitive, and the US Transportation Security Administration is planning on leaving things as they are. I doubt that any US machine will be picking up something as small as one piercing with a stud.

I'd totally agree about the non-random aspect of airport security checks, although I hadn't heard much to link it to appearance. My own experience is that people who get it are ones who have been linked to some sort of dissent or other non-Republican sort of activity. Case in point: one member of my extended family travelled to Cuba decades ago, as a photographer, and other members have questioned various government actions and policies over the last 35 years or so. As a result, we get picked 100% of the time. None of us has been able to fly within the last 3 years without being the "random" pick. The photographer was only allowed to fly with a fluorescent armband locked onto her, declaring her to be a likely terrorist, I suppose. Other family members have been picked and searched, even if they were as young as 5. Gotta love watching them x-ray crayons to protect us from terrorism.

It could be worse, though. A lesbian couple in my area, who are peace activists, got put on the "no fly" list and can't even board a plane. Apparently there must be a lot of pacifistic lesbians in Al Qaeda. Who'd have guessed?

I honestly don't mind the searching on planes, as it really doesn't invade my personal rights, IMHO.

It -is- funny to observe how non-random it is. I fly fairly frequently, too and from home from school. I used to have medium length hair, a little past my shoulders. I -never- got picked for a screening. Since I cut my hair (almost a buzz cut) I have been picked on every one of hte 4 flights I've been on.

This -could- be random selection, I won't deny, but it's very interesting at least.

It's funny becaue even though I know my piercing jewelry can't set off the metal detector it still makes me jumpy. Don't want to have to prove it to some stranger. I will say something, what they are doing isn't all that great. On a recent trip to Alaska I had just left a job and still had some of the stuff form my locker in my bag. Let me tell you how interesting it is to realize suddenly once you have gotten where you are going that you have a steak knife in your carry on bag. It was hidden with my chopsticks. The thought that I could have been caught scared the bejesus out of me. So much for xrays and random checks.

The xray personel must have a good laugh at times. I wonder if a butt plug would show up.

From what I can tell with this new machine.. YES!.. If they can detect a chocolate bar, they can detect a butt plug, a CBT, a genital peircing.. so on and so forth..

A.) I don't see how that stops people from just studying martial arts and beating the crap out of everyone a'la Bruce Lee style. I guess it stops casual terrorism, though.

B.) If they wanna look at me naked all they have to do is ask!

No reason to go through all that trouble, yeesh.

Yep, that would suck. While I don't mind telling people a have a special piercing I really wouldn't want to have to prove it to anyone. Well, anyone I didn't get to pick.

Well there are good and bad things about this, Id like to see a comparison between the two systems to see how they stack up. That xray for carryons can see everything in there, so then it stands to reason that they can see everything on the passenger too. Not that there is anything wrong with that it just seems that the,,,,less fortunate males may be embarassed by it. Is it like at the theme parks? do they try to sell you the pics at the end of the flight?....so much to consider so little time...Mykal

Being sumone whom flys internationally as well as domestically on a regular basis I can tell You that I would prefer that We ALL fly naked
and take out any worry what so ever that anyone has any thing that can be used other then their Own hands an feet to fend an attack. But to speak
realistically and looking at the xray pics which clearly show a AK stuck in the back of the what I will presume is a mans body, I say go for it...... flying is a privledge not a right and to have that privledge One must give into whats needed to enjoy such a thing I feel.........
