Aileen1968 -> Blah....computer problem (2/28/2013 4:58:48 PM)

I have a macbook pro. Starting yesterday it's decided to not open certain web pages.
My home page is google and when I go to it I see this...
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.com/” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again.

So obviously I use safari. Some pages open easily. Some I get this message about it dropping the connection.
Can't access netflix or google just to name a few.
Help! I've cleared the history and cache. Restarted multiple times. I'm very untechy so use stupid english if you have an ideas to help me.

I'm not familiar with Safari, but there have been so many issues lately with Java,
and just as many Java updates, that some browsers have actually disabled it.
I would suggest you first look to see if you have the latest Java installed (7.15)
and then check your Safari settings to see if Java script is enabled.
I've got my fingers crossed for you!

No Java on Google.

If it always happens on some pages and not on others and it always reports as a connection timeout it could be something external to your notebook and at your isp, assuming you're always connecting through the same provider. There is also a chance some part of your connection software is messed up. I'd call your isp's customer support they maight be able to fix it.

If not try a mal ware and a virus scan to make sure the machine is clean. If you find nothing I'd try using a different browser or reinstalling Safari.

I don't deal with Mac's but I decided to address this statement. You are not quite correct in saying there is no java on chrome, there is it is just not easily found in settings. It can be found here : chrome://plugins once you are in your settings tab. It is disabled by default as are many natural plugins.

As far as Safari and Java, I found this reference:

I have windows xp and collarme.com would not load for two days, same kind of error messages you were getting OP, and I used ie and things were just fine.

I don't know about the other side, but the path to collarchat has been intermittently broken during the past week. I've run multiple traces and advised support of where it breaks.

Just a wild thought, but, if you are running any kind of active malware protection that watches your Internet traffic, disable it and see what happens. A bad update can cause what you describe. If you find that's the case, don't worry; it'll be fixed quickly, because you can bet they've had reports about it.

I never wrote anything about Chrome. The op says she can't bring up Google.com. There is no Java on that page.

Yah...finally fixed after much ineffective googling from my phone since I couldn't from the laptop.
Turns out it was my avast antivirus program that caused the issue. Something about an IPv6 under it's webshield that got switched on.
Once I turned it off, everything worked perfectly.
