I wonder how many people are into some form of BDSM and don't talk about it.

I don't mean to be snarky, but what difference does it make? Whether the number is 5 or 5 billion, does it really matter?

I'm not attacking the OP, but I must say that I've never understood question that ask "How many people are into ____?" Usually the questions are impossible to answer. But even if they weren't, what difference would it make? Suppose the number of people who "are into some form of BDSM and don't talk about it" is 365,237,928. Okay, now what?

I honestly don't care.

There are thousands upon thousands of us in the public realm. If y'all in the 'private sector' want to do your own thing, more power to ya! What you get up to doesn't affect Me. My 'give a shit' barely held out to respond to this post.

I pretty much agree with this. I don't give a flying fuck how many people participate in BDSM. It's not my business.

Esinn -> RE: How big is the community? (3/22/2013 6:44:50 AM)

I actually took a precise measurement using scientific methods in only the most pristine conditions in 2010. While it might have grown..... Then the community was this big:

First, there is no "community" in any meaningful sense.

Second, it depends on where you draw the line. When you say "BDSM" are you including the occasional silk scarf and nails raking down a back?

MasterCaneman -> RE: How big is the community? (3/22/2013 8:21:44 AM)

I may be grabbing at straws here, but I think the poster was meaning people who are into it in a identifiable way, or perhaps the 24/7s? I dunno. It's so hard to look at someone and say, "They're sceners, they're vanillas, they're weekend warriors, etc, etc,"

Of course it is because there are no rules. What I can tell you is that Carol and I are definitely "not kinky" in any meaningful sense -- at least if you're using BDSM as a measure for kink. It's worth remembering that there are entire horizons of "alternate sexuality" that don't involve whips & chains. There are certainly some "less than usual" facets to our lovemaking... they just don't involve BDSM.

As you noted, real people and relationships don't fit well into the tiny little boxes that BDSM'ers like to fit themselves into. Many people who actually know Carol and I pretty well in the real world come to different conclusions about whether we are "kinky" or not and whether we are "members of the community" or not.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: How big is the community? (3/23/2013 12:12:31 AM)

I've never heard any complaints in that department. YMMV.

Dyfrynt -> RE: How big is the community? (3/23/2013 10:13:35 AM)

I have never understood the stance that "there is no community". Of course there is a community. What do you call the members who come here? Or the folks that go to BDSM conventions, etc. Yes it is a loosely related, very loosely related, community. Yes it is based on a wide range of definitions, differing opinions. But it still IS.

As to how many people are in this amorphous community? Why does it matter. I'm curious why the OP asked the question.

There are (as of last Tuesday) 6,174,812 people into some form of BDSM.

Let me know if I can help in any way in the future.

The Janus report puts all types of kink at around 15%, both sexes, men only nominally higher. This during the height of the AIDS epidemic, but before internet porn, so all things considered I'm calling it a relatively stable percentage.

What also amazes me is how there are a lot of male submissives who are into Fem-Dom,but live in countries where women can't even drive.Studies only account for people willing to talk about their sexuality. How many people on those studies declined.Perhaps one of the best known Doctors of sexuality was Al Kingsley. Now his was a authetic study.I think this is more out there than what people realize.Literally people from all over the world into this stuff.Just look at the profiles right here on Collarme, you have people from literally all over the world. That is one reason why I like Collarme so much.

Where is that country? I'll give up kink!

Charles6682 -> RE: How big is the community? (3/25/2013 5:25:40 AM)

Saudi Arabia is one country where Women can't drive.I get stats on all the people who "Like" my facebook page.A good portion of the male subs who like my profile come from the Middle East. The internet has been a good invention because it does give people a chance to learn somethings they may not have otherwise.Everything is on the internet now.

Yes there are a lot of Middle Eastern males who are in support of women's equality, and even FemDomme. I get peeks and messages from several countries over there every week. Several subs that I know personally are actually either from Muslim countries or actually LIVE THERE. One of My online subs (of many years, and is a dear friend) lives in Saudi Arabia. Imagine being a well-to-do businessman living in a country where the women you love and respect--your mother, sisters, girlfriends--are opressed, and there is not much you can do about it without getting punished severely for your views. These things are held in strict law over there and punishment can be cruel. It's a religious State, public opinion has little impact on the laws. Sometimes I worry that our conversations might be intercepted and be a danger to him. I get to listen to rants about how hot his mother's Abaya is (that full black robe women are forced to wear when in public...by the way, they are wearing REGULAR clothes underneath, similar to our own clothing: a dress or a business type suit) They can remove the abaya when indoors with family & close friends, but out on the streets in 120 degree weather, they must wear it to cover themselves. The men who love them have to watch them suffer.

Charles6682 -> RE: How big is the community? (3/25/2013 9:14:39 AM)

I talked to a male submissive from Saudi Arabia. It does have to be tough being a male who supports equality to live in a culture that oppresses women.People in those countries have to keep a very hidden profile.I would certainly not be as open as I am if I lived in a country so strict.I would just have to practice this behind closed doors.Hopefully times change over there for the Women who are still constantly oppressed.

IamMuffin -> RE: How big is the community? (3/25/2013 11:15:54 AM)

When you take out the married cheating men or those with bad gleekit cock shocks proclaiming they be masterfool in their particular genre your left with about 2.

When i used to go to the clubs in Scotland there was anywhere between 10 and 70 and that's from a population of 5 million

the maths is somewhat trickier of who is into it;
deviant
damaged
decadent
Horny
men out number women on all sites - large portion are those after the idea of a quick thrill - so we cant count them
readers of 50 shades of grey
porn watchers

= i have no real idea

perhaps tis yay big

as you have thrash them with stingy nettle lot or worse
to hand cuffing or blindfolding

all fulfill the necessary criteria

Bigger than a breadbox, smaller than the world.
