The theory behind a peer specialist is that presumably they have the same issues but have gotten their act together, so no excuses will fly with them. It only works if the peer has their shit together. Refusing to go to support meetings? Refusing to go to therapy? Refusing to go to the psychiatrist and get the dosage adjusted? None of these qualify as having your shit together. I have a kid with more severe issues, so severe that she's the only one with this severe variant to graduate high school, graduate college, compete on a level playing field with sports instead of Special Olympics, and she has her act together a lot more than the op. She's done the peer counseling, and is able to look the teens in the eye and tell them what's going on. She gets their respect and liking. And when the meds weren't working, she called the psychiatrist and had them upped so she could sleep. Because not sleeping is a sign that nobody should ignore.
