Jefferson was apparently of two minds about himself, so you're in good company. The catalog of things he said and then did the exact opposite of what he said is fairly extensive (the most glaring example...the Louisiana Purchase).

If you want a good biography, I'd recommend Joseph Ellis' "American Sphinx."
