TheWriter13 -> Should Melissa King lose her crown? (3/5/2013 7:05:50 PM)

I heard on the news that a Ms. Teen Delaware contestant is losing her crown over a porno she did months earlier. I personally feel that just because a girl makes one mistake she should not have to pay her whole career for it I mean this isn't the 50's it's a more modern time. I mean she's young and made a mistake. Besides with the number of porno's out there you'd be hard pressed to find a girl who hasn't done porn or done something that would make her lose the crown.

I don't know to much about those contests but don't they agree to certain codes of ethics or something? Agreeing not to do or participate in certain things? Did she lie about doing anything like that and that is what cost her? I really don't know. Now if she agrees not to do certain things or voice certain opinions while wearing the crown and it comes out later that she broke that vow months or years before she made it, then no, I don't think she should lose it. That's like agreeing to do a promo with Pepsi and agreeing only to drink Pepsi products and getting your contract cut because they found out three years before your agreement you were a Coke drinker. What, do we have to plan out our entire lives from birth to not violate some contract we have no idea we are even going to sign 20 years from now?

She most likely signed a morals clause once she entered the pageant just like they do in the bigger pageants. If so then they have every right to strip her title.

thishereboi -> RE: Should Melissa King lose her crown? (3/5/2013 10:04:35 PM)

I heard that she resigned. While it sucks I believe that it's one of the rules she agreed to when she accepted the title. And no I wouldn't be hard pressed to find a girl who hasn't done porn. In fact I would be willing to bet more don't than do.

I don't mean to be snarky here, but is being a pageant queen really a career? It's not really something we have over here but I always assumed it was something you did as a hobby (albeit a hobby people take very seriously) until you hit 25 and went out and found a job. Am I wrong? Had he not been caught out, would this have kick started a career for her?

PS I am very dubious that most girls have done porn.

Here in the U.S. once you win the crown you also win scholarships to college and job offers after you get your degree. You usually get a car and all kinds of other awards. But once you win you also have to agree to all the terms such as having to show up at events, keeping in shape, keeping to the morals clause, etc...So yeah, basically they can make a career of it.

And then there are those who basically make a career out of becoming finalists in pageants all over the world. Usually they get sponsored by businesses or their family pays for it but they also have to buy all their own gowns, makeup, classes to make them better speakers, give them a talent, etiquette or whatever else they feel they need.

The pageants bring you a known name as long as you have the title. That and a pretty face adds value to any type of commercials or ads they might get. It's not the career, it's just a size 14 in the door. And like a salesman you have to work it from there.

Jewelcrafter -> RE: Should Melissa King lose her crown? (3/5/2013 10:54:13 PM)

Are the moral clause also held against what they do before they sign it? Or did she do this after she signed the clause?

Wow. Very interesting, thanks.

I would say it matters both before and after. Say the found out she sold drugs for a year or two before she started doing pageants. Or she was into cock fighting. You think they would give a fuck that it was before? Now you might be tempted to say porn is legal and the others are not. That's right but all of them count towards a persons credibility. Part of the unspoken duties is " perfect role model". No mistakes allowed.

FR
The serious pageant girls get scholarships and prizes and
use it as a launching pad for modeling, acting, tv, etc in
some cases. Halle Berry was the first runner up in the Miss
USA pageant, Delta Burke was a Miss Florida and competed
in the Miss America pageant she won a scholarship that enabled
her to study acting in London for two years. Oprah Winfrey
was Miss Black Teenage Tennessee and I believe one of her
prizes or as result of winning of the title was given her first
job in broadcasting at a station in Nashville.

Contestants sign documents with moral clauses, etc if she
lied and it appears she did they had every right to strip her
of the title. And while porn is more common these days it
doesn't mean the majority of girls are doing them.

Yes. It's the same as any job someone wants. They check your background and if your past had stuff that did not jive with the company's ethics then you would not be getting hired aka competing. If you did something while on the job or even in your spare time when you signed a contract that said you would not partake in certain actions, then you will get fired....aka...stripped of your crown.

For most of these gigs, the verbiage of the contract includes past deeds, present activities, and a promise not to violate the terms of any morals clause during a potential reign. (For example, you can't have a past criminal conviction and hold a title.) Since the gal knew of her prior activities, she really never should have entered because she knew that the past porno appearance wasn't acceptable according to the organization when she signed that form.

Nice new name, btw. I guess the other profile didn't do so well?

She also apparently has a couple of warrants out for her arrest.

Shouldnt someone post the vid, so we can determine how outraged we should be?
