Hi there!

Forget about hermaphrodites. They're rare and now referred to as intersex.

Hi Amnesia.

I'm guessing you edited your post after Baroana posted. It's good that you listened to her advice and tried to choose a more appropriate term.

Hermaphrodite people (or inter-sex people) are people who at birth have the reproductive organs of both males and females - or at least partly. Or it can mean that a person's genetics are more complicated than usual in a way which means they can't be simply classified as genetically male or female. It's not very common and probably won't come up, though it's good to know you wouldn't hold it against someone.

I think the term you are looking for is trans or trans woman. That's an umbrella term which covers a wide range of people, including those who are physically male but identify and live as women, or those who have begun or completed the sex-change process.

Can anyone remember any good threads about being trans* that we can point the OP towards?

Welcome to the message board, Amnesia. Good luck in your search.
At Athena's request, I am copying a link to a very informative thread.

No good ones but a lotta bad ones. They look kinda like the Middle East.

I'm going to give a brief summary of my take.

There are two reasons a man would try to look like a woman. One is to dress for a quick sexual thrill, and then go back to being male. That's a CD (crossdresser).

The second is because the person feels like she really IS a woman. It's like her parents forced her to dress as a boy, and God did too. That is a transsexual (TS). Although some refer to them as trans, that term is confusing because the word "transgender" refers to both CDs and TSs.

The die is cast when she begins taking hormones. That results in several changes, most notably breast growth. Electrolysis is frequently used to remove facial hair at this point as well. I'll note that different bodies react different ways to getting female hormones. Some bodies have heard attacks or strokes when getting them. Some lap them up greedily. Transition is not done lightly. It works best when the TS is young, although I've seen some in their 40s that transitioned well.

If she quits at this point, she's referred to as a pre-op or non-op. If she has the Sexual Reassignment Surgery (SRS), she's then referred to as a post-op. The hangup is the cost - $20K to $30K.
