There is HUGE money in the PRISON INDUSTRY in america from the legislature, court, and attorneys and their private corporations!

So why does the USA, a country that proclaims its love of freedom, deprive more of its citizens of their freedom by throwing them into jail than anywhere else?

Think the War on Drugs:

Look at the sharp rise in prisoners starting in 1980...Basically, when the US appointed drug czars and started ramping up its efforts against drugs. Wiki link

Also think broader in terms of immigration and statutory crap along the lines of victimless crimes:Victimless crime in Federal Prison Not the best source I admit, but the DOJ is very nebulous with many of its prison stats (At least anything I found).

Finally, think of all of the prisons and government union employees who's mouths we now need to feed. We have to keep them busy....

As they say 'this ain't shit.' The repubs still lead the political leagues in indictments, convictions and jail time.

wiki:
Gary Webb

Former DEA agent Celerino Castillo alleged that during the 1980s Ilopango Airport in El Salvador was used by Contras for drug smuggling flights with the knowledge and complicity of the CIA. These allegations were part of an investigation by the United States Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General.[10] Castillo also testified before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Between 1996 and 1998 the Central Intelligence Agency investigated and then published a report about its alleged involvement in cocaine sales in the US. This was prompted by the journalist Gary Webb's report[11] in the San Jose Mercury News alleging that the CIA was behind the 1980s crack epidemic. Gary Webb alleged through his Dark Alliance series that the government had been complicit in the trade of drugs in the inner city through the use of a kingpin named Freeway Ricky Ross. According to the Oakland Tribune, "In the course of his rise, prosecutors estimate that Ross exported several tons of cocaine to New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and made more than $600 million in the process."[12][13][14]

How dumb does one have to be to start a thread beginning with "Stop prison overcrowding" and then refuse to discuss guess what - prison overcrowding? [8|]

And how dense and arrogant does someone have to be, that they insist on having it their way, because they don't get (get offended by???) a joke?

Not quite up to the Blagojevich level, of trying to sell the seat our President left vacant in the Senate, but yet another Democrat ex-official should soon be heading off to federal prison.

More to come, I'm sure. The City of Bell may wind up setting a new standard.

Go figure.....wasn't it Marion Barry / DC Mayor that got elected AGAIN even after he was both caught on tape buying or selling crack, and AFTER he served prison time.....I am rarely stunned by the electorate anymore.

I just sit back and enjoy the show.

TheHeretic -> RE: Reduce prison overcrowding - stop electing Democrats! (3/12/2013 8:04:16 PM)

Yep. That was the guy.

I'm hoping the Bell case will get some good exposure. The whole city council was indicted there, and the, "we had no idea that we were actually supposed to understand what we were voting on," defense seems straight off The Onion wire.
