BOYS WILL BE GIRLS The first ever beauty competition for transvestites has been held near Bangkok in Thailand. Twenty-four cross-dressers and transsexuals who have had operations to change their appearance took part in the event. It was as traditional as any female contest - they all paraded in evening wear and skimpy bikinis before going on to answer questions about their hopes and aspirations. They came from 11 Asian countries as well as Germany and France. The on-stage "interviews" provided a revealing insight into transgenderism and how males come to the realisation that they want to be women. Jesse Rogers, a a 29-year-old fashion design student from Singapore realised she was attracted to men when he was in the army. Jesse said: "I found that I liked men and that I wanted to be a woman. I suspected it before but I didn't know for sure until then." Arisha Rani, 29 from India said that "from childhood I was always wearing my younger sister's clothes". Arisha also revelaed that his large Adam's Apple spoiled his look as a woman so he had it surgically filed down. Thai transvestite Treechada Petcharat was crowned Miss International Queen 2004.
