"Thick" is an adjective used to describe the body type of many black women, and it is not an insult. In fact, it's how I describe myself.

According to the standard BMI scale, I am obese. However, the scale does not account for fitness. I am able to lift 175 lbs. comfortably and I eat right. I am also very flexible. So, I tend to go by what I feel is right for my body rather than the standards of American medicine.

Also, this is a cool blog. Check it out: http://danceswithfat.wordpress.com/

That person has a blog post claiming that not being able to fit in a regular chair is "institutional oppression". Really?

I did a google search for natural women, in otherwords, no augmentations done at all.

Most of the pictures fell into two categories;
1) so skinny you can count ribs and clearly see shoulder joints, no body fat at all, and apparently no muscle mass either.
Or
2) Women bigger than I am. I mean women bragging at being over 350 pounds!

Go to Google, select Images (image search) and enter "photography nudes". I think you'll be happier.

She can be a bit over the top but her main point is that you can be happy and healthy at any size. Ragen has very good blogs about diets and how dangerous some of them can be. I enjoy her writing. She is very body positive.

Spirited, no law suit for me, I hate that shit. [:'(]

Without the input from those you love you may have went a different and less successful way.

My experience was exactly the opposite of this. Without all that well-meaning but corrosive "input," I shed weight at college in a way I'd never been able to do at home.

That's your definition. Apparently Google image search disagrees.

The way Google's image search works is best explained by Google: "Google analyzes the text on the page adjacent to the image, the image caption and dozens of other factors to determine the image content. Google also uses sophisticated algorithms to remove duplicates and ensure that the highest quality images are presented first in your results."

MadamAsianDom -> RE: Okay, I am confused, or, are these people aware they are not at a healthy weight. (3/14/2013 9:23:20 PM)

I don't pay attention to BMI for pretty much the same reason that absolutchocolat listed above. For me, it's along the same lines as the military height / weight standards. The military's standards doesn't take into account that everyone doesn't have the same body type and what 150 pounds (for example) may look like on one person, isn't the way it will necessarily look on everyone else, even when the other people are the same height.

I've been having to be "taped" at my official weigh-ins for years now because the maximum height / weight for my age was so low.

I'm now under that maximum, and honestly not happy about how I look, and my joints seem to bother me more since I've lost the weight, then they did prior to the weight loss. I'd rather re-gain about 10 to 15 pounds, but I will try to hold off on attempting that until after I'm retired later this year.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Okay, I am confused, or, are these people aware they are not at a healthy weight. (3/15/2013 5:55:07 AM)

I know that I am morbidly obese but I am stuck where I am at. I did lose about 50+ pounds last year and even if I exercise, the rest is not coming off. Can't walk too much or else my back starts hurting and spasming. I want to work with weights but can't afford a gym membership. I try to watch my diet but I cannot avoid chocolate and steak. Salads make me sick since I had my gallbladder taken out.

I drink orange juice, diet green tea and water every day with maybe a diet MD when we go shopping. My 4X pants are too loose on me and the 3X ones are getting that way too. I still wear 4X shirts because I am a 46DD (depending on the bra maker).

Needles, bugger what the doctor says. Mine has not been after me to lose more weight but just to stay healthy. I talk fish oil pills, calcium and prenatal vitamins along with my script meds for my mental health and cholesterol pill. Right now I feel like scrambled eggs with cheese...and bacon bits...

What happened to trying to be healthy?

In case you hadn't noticed people all across the globe do unhealthy things for reasons that seem sufficient to them. In general, Americans don't have much focus on "health" and they have even less knowledge. Your post is a great example of that since the entire thing has very little to do with health. You're more looking at aesthetics.

Jeff--Can't argue with that.

jlf....wanna get really healthy? promise yourself you won't drive your car anywhere 4 days a week. It is amazing what regular walking and such can do for you.

Actually due to a back injury I cant drive, until I get a release from doc. I live in country and my 14month old nephew and I go walking every evening... actually I walk, he rides in the stroller
