You can take the pope out of the Jesuits but I highly doubt you'll take Jesuit out of the Pope...

I'm just curious how many of the people with strong opinions (and hearts full of hatred) are Catholic to begin with?

Exactly!

And no one is forced to be Catholic either.

There needs to be a major house cleaning in the Vatican and I am hoping they got the right man for the job.

My prayers are with him. It must be an unspeakably daunting job to face, particularly at an age when I fervently hope to be well into retirement.

I think that is part of it... I think his age works as a benefit in this case

He's 76, right? Makes you wonder if the cardinals avoided electing a younger man, just to avoid the shadow of the, "prophecy" hanging over him.

Those prophecies are worth as much as the ones predicting the end of the world last year.

More of being able to make the hard, theocratic decisions without having to worry about the long term politics.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that.

So, let's see England try to take the Maldives away now that God is on the side of the Argentinians.

More important is that the new Pope has spent his time in the "trenches" and not as some academic, or Vatican functionary.

The online chatter between rivals Argentina and Brasil regarding which country provided the new Pope is something to read. And Pope Francis is a known supporter of the Argentine football team as well.

Well, duh. See the quotes on the word? If people believe in it though, or it is a gift of distraction and attack to those who hate the church, it can still have an impact. Why not let a good man be a good symbol in the time he still has, and run out the number in the kook pages, then bring in someone younger, and more up to the challenges of the job, without handing him the bullshit baggage?
