Status: offline 		I have a fun evening coming up in a week and would love to have available the one thing my toybag is sorely lacking...floggers. I want them to be quite servicable, but I can't afford the toystore prices. I'd like to make a set (some smaller, heavier, etc, than others), but am trying not to break the bank. Let's say $50 max for the whole thing. Additionally, I am arts and crafts challenged, so this has got to be simple. While looking nice would be great, cheap and functional are far more important at the moment. I appreciate all the help in advance!

Status: offline 		The big cost is the falls. I knew a Dom who would go to a thrift store and buy a leather jacket cheap. He would then use a shop knife to cut the jacket into straight strips of leather.

The rest of the expense is a handle (obtainable at a crafts store, Home Depot, or a leg from a broken chair), and something to tie it all together.

Status: offline 		Having been 'flogged' with a doubled-up bunch of rope, I'm surprised more people don't use rope falls. Something worth exploring, perhaps?

Status: offline 		I've made two floggers, one for me and one for a friend. They aren't fancy schmancy or anything but very functional and fun to use. I used pieces of dowel from the local hardware store for the handles. I used a suede dress for the falls on one and remnants/scraps of sueded leather from a flea market for the falls on the other. I used a quilter's rule to measure the strips and a quilter's rotary cutter to cut the strips. In both cases I used Shoe Goo leather glue to stick them all together. Both of them are sturdy and still going strong. The dress was a cast-off of a friend and, therefore, free. All the other supplies I used for both the floggers added up to about $25 altogether. I did already have the quilter's rule and rotary cutter though. But you could just use a ruler and a very sharp box knife instead.

Status: offline 		I actually have a nice piece of leather here that I got specifically with the idea of making floggers. Last time I tried I had a lot of trouble measuring everything out and cutting straight. Dowels, glue, and such I can get on the cheap with hubby's special discount card. I am still working out how to overcome the cutting issues. I mean I wasn't even close to straight and that was with a ruler.

As far as gettting the effect I want out of them, I know the leather type and thickness along with number and size of the falls are the key components. I am just not sure what a good mix of them would be for each that I want out of this project. I'd like:
1. Whippy and stingy
2. Balanced thud and sting
3. Heavy and thuddy

I made a looped bungee cord whip once...a fine achievement if I do say. Too bad it is in the toybag of another now as I made it as a gift. *sigh*

Status: offline 		There are a couple of people around here who have been making them out of duct tape. =p Not the most aesthetically pleasing things, but they're stingy. =p
salavaged and repurposed materials are an excellent way of bringing your costs down. So many old leather jackets, or heck, even old chairs if they're not beat up too badly.
If you want to dress up a pre-turned railing piece or chairleg, you can always go grab a fancy little drawer pull from a craft store.

Status: offline 		I've made a few floggers out of old bicycle inner tubes! You need to wash them first as they are powder coated on the inside, but they have a fantastic sting to them. Easy to cut with a long metal ruler and a craft knife. I also round the ends, as sharp ends on the rubber can cut if you're unlucky. Very cheap to make and a great way to recycle!

Status: offline 		I know a UK based company that sells and ships very reasonable priced floggers £15 for a heavy flogger is very reasonable. Not much help in the US but any Uk type feel free to message me I wont advertise here.

Status: offline 		Here's another good thing for making wonderful floggers. I make and yep sell double tailed floggers. And Para cord make beautiful ones and you can make it any color you want and when you heat the end to seal it it makes beauty's that sting. If they are into pain - used old phone cords work- or the plastic that sets the screen material into the frame. Its cheap and when you add it to the para cord- then it becomes even more wicked. You can also buy from the good will broken chain necklaces and add chain into it if you want. All said and done one of those floggers will cost you if you make it 10.00 : I sell then for 20 easy.

Status: offline 		I built this one last night. It's my first home built flogger. Has a 'comfortably' heavy impact, a very controllable amount of sting. Best part is that it's in Boise State blue and orange. Makes flogging submissives that taunt me with Oregon Ducks gear all the more fun.

Go Bronco's!

The flogger is 3/8" diamond braid polypro, probably about $9 at Fred meyers. The handle is 10 inch long wooden dowel, cut from longer 4 ft dowel also purchased at Fred Meyers for about $4. Small finish nails to tack the falls in place before over wrapping. A bit of gorilla glue on the end of the handle to keep the wrap from moving at all.



Takes some time to properly seal the ends with a candle, and keep the over wraps super tight. Makes for something to do while watching Always Sunny and waiting for some company.

You can make them out of just about anything that's stringy or can be made stringie. The insides of bungie cords. Nylon or cotton rope. One thing that makes a positively evil flogger is rubber screen spline.

Status: offline 		The one we use I made from a piece of saddle leather (~3mm in thickness)

The piece was ~50 cm in length and of a width of ~25 cm (20x10 inches)

Lengthwise are 14 slits of equal length (for the 15 tails) and of ~35 cm (`14 inches) to make the "tails."

The leather was watered and then rolled into a tight cylinder, and secured with a small strip of the same leather ~2.5 cm and of length a ~8cm length place immediately behind the tails and heavy tack was driven through the strip to keep it tight.

Each tail was cut off at a 45 degree angle at the tip, and the "handle" was cut off at a 45% angle to make what was a hard point. the entire assembly was vat dyed in the black color, and harness oiled.

It has given excellent service and seen use since 1998.

I took these measurements off the unit just now, and did not bother to measure it in particular when I fabricated the flogger. It has a heavier impact then many production leather ones I have inspected or handled, due to the heavy tail thickness, and the woman likes it.

How did you cut your leather? I'm in agreement with other posters that cutting a straight piece free hand is a pain in the ass. And not the pleasant kind of pain, more like hemorrhoidal pain.

But I certainly could do so with reduced speed using a work knife with a well curved blade and a decent and sharp point.

I have a split leaf table or any table that has a seam/leaf will do. I measure with a small mark on the leather at each end then use a sharp knife and just cut down the leaf of the table and Viola Instant perfect straight line

You can also get a strap cutter from Tandy Leather that will do the trick.
