some meanie poopie head broke into Daddy's car an stole my broken i pod, his magic cards an his sonic screw driver, a prop from doctor who. and his very nice back pack. He's very sad and wants to cry, and I don't blame him but he says it's stupid to cry over such small stuff.

He leaves his car unlocked at night because he believed we were safe out here, we are way out in the country, there's really not much rural traffic or foot traffic, and I guess it's a small lesson to be learned, never assume, but I am grateful they didn't break any windows or nothing. If the car had been locked they might have damaged the car.

We live out in the backwoods and everyone keeps an eye on each other. Every time Mom and I start a fire, one neighbor comes over to make sure we are not burning down the trailer.

I am sorry some asswipe got into your truck. We don't have anything worth stealing in the mini-van and who wants to bother 2 women who have 2 gun cases in the bedroom...and lots of buckshot.

Thanks.

Our stuff wasn't worth stealing either, but I bet they saw a really nice looking back pack and assumed there would be electronics in there. I can understand the Ipod but the jokes on them it doesn't work any more.

I am just glad Daddy didn't leave his cell phone or his working Ipod in the car.

We'll replace his Magic cards and his Sonic screw driver an the back pack.

I am sorry. This is a small town with a low crime rate. Even so, I've had the car and mailbox egged, the mailbox and recyclable bin stolen. Small stuff, easily replaced but upsetting. You just feel violated. And he has every right to cry if he feels like it. It's the violation more than the things that get to you.

We live on the edge of a small town (small by US standards).
We are slap in the middle of a lower-class, almost slum, housing estate.
There's about 7,000 houses on this estate and if anyone knows the UK, you'll know it's all crammed together into the smallest of space - not spread out like most places I've seen in the US.

At a guess, more than 70% of the families that live here are either dysfunctional or just thieves and rogues - or all three!
80% of the remaining inhabitants are of dubious nature.
That said, most thieves around here don't shit on their own doorstep.
That in itself means that most of the vandalism and theft occurs elsewhere - not here
Something to be said about living in a semi-run-down area.
Even so, we would never think of leaving the car unlocked anywhere - ever!

We live in the township outside a small town, I think the official head count is around 5000. Not many folks around here but we always lock the car and the doors. My youngest was coming home one night and caught a neighbor from the next cul-de-sac stealing our next door neighbor's flat screen tv. My storage shed keeps getting broken into and vandalized. We literally live 1000 feet from the turnpike and I think some of the crime here is "imported" via that. You can't trust anyone anywhere these days. My disabled son had his ipod communications device stolen from him on the damn school bus! Nobody respects anyone or anything anymore. They want it so they just take it and then see what else they can get from you.

Last Monday, I was taking the Greyhound to Dallas, transferring to Austin. We stopped in Greenville and I saw the agent outside. No problems there.

Get to Dallas and after I sit down with my hot dog meal, see the same agent there...I asked him what happened.

Apparently one of my fellow riders stepped off to use the restroom and did not get back on...in other words she got left behind.

She was lucky. The agent drove her to Dallas and she was able to retrieve her things. Nothing was taken from her. There were some honest people on the bus.

Usually when I get off the bus in Greenville, I take my little wallet with me. The big one only holds a few dollars while my little on has my debit card (attached to my checking account). I rather lose a few dollars than my card (besides it cost $12 to replace that sucker).

The fuckers took my coatDaddy and I didn't even realize it till today. I asked him what about my coats, did they take them, and he said no your coats are right here see? and he didn't realize there should have been 3 coats in the car not two, and i though nothing of it either.

I got Calley may dressed for a saint patty's day event, and I called an they said no that was yesterday sorry, and since she was already on leash and excited to go I didn't want to disappoint her, I took her for a walk. And low and behold I walk by my neighbors house, an there's a little butterfly jingly bell key chain, and i take a few more steps and laying in the ditch, there's one of my good coats. Fortunately it's not been really dewy lately, nor has it been wet, so the coats fine. But finding it gave me hope that maybe we'd find his back pack so my dad and I drove around, and nope, it wasn't there. It might have been at the time they dropped it, IF they had dropped it, it was a really nice back pack, but the area is an area heavily populated with school kids. If it had been there a kid would likely picked it up. I hate that it didn't occur to me and my dad to drive up and down farther than Daddy could have had time to do. He only circled our block cause he had to leave for work.

I feel worse knowing there was a slight chance it could have been turned up and it didn't occur to any one to canvas just more than our block.

What the hells that got to do with the fact that some asshole got into their car and stole stuff from them? So they want to replace some things that were stolen....because they're not rich means tough shit they have to do without? Maybe instead of soda this month they can buy a new pack of magic cards.
That was a pretty classless comment.

It's rather off topic but I have to agree with you....I would never leave my car unlocked ever either...and almost threw up when I realised during last stay at parents place, that dad leaves his car unlocked as well....I mean...ok, we are not a high crime area either, but recently are a lot of news about a massive raise of burglaries in southern Germany, including parents area....so I would seriously not risk it...

And I am glad about your view and your experience of your housing estate, but when I wrote my essay about the housing situation in the UK in 2007 I was rather shocked about the findings about housing estates in the UK in regards to crime...

I dont think they would try to damage a car sitting right next to a door, but I wonder if the car had been locked would they.have smashd a window or otherwise damaged the car.

But there's a huge difference in the two scenarios....

Unlocked car - easy target.
Thieves can get in and out silently and take anything they want virually unnoticed.
And almost impossible to claim off any insurance you might have had.
Reason? Unlocked car. Simple as that!

Locked car - not so easy.
They have to smash a window - that makes a lot of noise. It's a deterrant on its own.
If they really want to steal something then yes, they will break a window.
Theft and a broken window?? Easy insurance claim.
Claim to get the car window repaired and also claim for the stolen property.
You might have to pay an excess charge (depending on your policy wording) but ordinarily you wouldn't be out of pocket.

I have never understood the logic behind leaving a car (or house) unlocked when your not in it.

I have two convertibles. I never leave anything in the car that someone else may think is valuable. I leave it unlocked because there is nothing to steal and replacing the top is a bitch.

Crime is everywhere, especially during a recession. Vandalism is becoming more and more common in small towns where crystal meth and prescription drug addiction is booming.

Sorry that this happened to you, honey. No one deserves that.

Another reason to have a hard-top, or at least a convertible that has a hardtop roof.

If a thief even thinks there's something to nose around and look at, they will knife through your soft-top to get in.
What would happen if they opened your car, found nothing of value worth stealing, and decided to rip your seats to pieces just out of sheer spite??
I've seen that happen more than once.
And the comment you always hear is "there wasn't anything worth stealing so I don't understand...".
Quite simple really - frustration and revenge, because they can.

And the same thing applies - an open car means no insurance claim.
It costs a small fortune to replace the interior of a car as well as the soft-top.

So leaving your car (or house) unlocked at any time is just inviting trouble and expense.
Even living in a low-crime area doesn't make you immune.

Fair enough, nobody ever deserves to be robbed or vandalised.
But to make it easier to facilitate such activity is just irreprehensible IMHO.
You might just as well hand them a knife and say.... "Go ahead!"

I have never understood stupidity

That could happen regardless of owning convertibles.

BTW, I've owned convertibles for 20 years and have never had a problem. But, someone smashed the window and stole the (stock) stereo out of the sedan that I owned prior to my first Miata.
