RosaB -> I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 8:46:44 AM)

Obviously I'm not such a prude if I'm on this site. [;)] (Well, hopefully anyway)

We ban  Janet Jackson's Boob, but show children bouncing on parents shoulders while blaring songs featuring catchy song  lyrics like promiscuous girl, promiscous boy, on a national daytime show and everyone just jumping up smiling like it's such a grand thing.  Huh?  wthigo?  Mind you.  I'm enjoying the entertainment and wasn't one of  the people upset about Janets popout.  It just never ceases to amaze me how humans shut their minds all in sink when its convienient.

I admit, I don't care for the lyrics, but I enjoy the melody and continue to be facinated by the song just as I was by Donna Sommer's "Love to Love You Baby " back in the 70, more so because Promiscuos is featured on many family oriented shows.  And at least  Donna's song sparked some discussion.  But gee now it's ok for an 11 year old to think being promiscuous is something to aim for in life.  Will it ever be safe for kids to be kids again?  No wonder so many kids rebel against society and their parents.  Most of our speacies really are a bunch of coconuts.

My Quaterly Rant.  [:D]

There have been suggestive lyrics in songs now for a long time. Heck, weren't The Beattles accused of having racy lyrics?

I do not think lyrics in songs effect children much. they are liking the beats. I sometimes laugh when I hear a song now that I loved when I was young and realize how inappropriate the lyrics were. I think it still comes down to the parents. Teaching their own children values they want them to have and enforcing them. My parents had very liberal view of sex and my exposure to sex as a teenager but even with this, they would have never let me dressed or acted like many teenagers I see now.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 9:42:29 AM)

I really can't stand that song.  Then again, I have a personal vendetta against money music.  You know the kind I mean.  The ones who make music to make money and for no other reason: not love of music, not self-expression, just pure unadulterated greed.  Greed is valid, but I don't have to like its music.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 9:47:28 AM)

The lyrics sure are affecting kids when you have 10 year old boys calling 10 year old girls bitches and niggers cause they heard it on some rap song. Yes it happens, Children repeat what they hear, don't belive me listen to my 12 year old niece when she used to say pardon me don't be mad at me I farted cause other kids said it and she thought it was great to repeat it:P or my neighobrs 4 year olds saying  fuck fuck fuck at the dinner table because an older child said it and they thought it was hella funny because the girl who was saying it was a friend of the families.

Kids will repeat what they hear, apropriate or not.

edited to add so will some adults lol.

Just listen to the casual way that kids (and adults for that matter) use profanity in public now. It is part of the coarsening of our society. And of course music and probably tv to an even greater degree is behind this. Add to that lazy ass parents and it is no wonder kids behave the way they do.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 11:41:47 AM)

I do not believe in censorship of any sort.

I think everyone has the right to make the movie, sing the song or write the book they want. And yes walk down the beach with a thong on.

Its MY job as a PARENT to guide him threw the rights and wrongs and morals that most have.To point out in public when asked a question ...well some people live different than us.We all have rights to be Ourselves. And I dont pussyfoot around the subject,I'm honest,to the point and explain in terms they understand.

No one else has the right to tell Me what is okay for MY child.

The human body is a beautiful thing and shouldnt be ashamed off. That doesnt mean I want them watching sex at 11...close eyes fast forward,Thats where the power lies...In My hands.

Kids rebel because of parents and rules.
I have given My child permission to do things and guess what...he never does them.
Take away the some of the no-nos and you will be surprised how well they do in being responsible.

Yup. Take away the mystique/rebelliousness, teach them openly and fully, and see where it goes.

Maybe we'll actually have teens who are understanding of their sexual feelings and desires and choose better options for themselves.

Moloch -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 1:44:29 PM)

Wow you are the shrinking minority of parents who take time and responsibility to actually parent their children and take responsibility for them, instead of letting the  giant day care centers we call schools take care of them.

Kids are using those words  because their parents are letting them. I got punished plenty of times when inappropiate words escaped my mouth. All kids hear bad things, and it it not just from the radio, many times from their own parents.

It comes down to personal responability and parenting. Ten and Eleven year olds need to be taught what is appropiate from their parents.

Arpig -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 2:29:12 PM)

Rock and roll was going to destroy us all....and yet we survived.
"Inappropriate lyrics have always been around, anybody remember the Rolling Stones song Star Star? It all comes down to what you as a parent see as appropriate for your child. It is your responsibility to teach/raise them the way you see fit, not that of society. That which you feel your child should be protected against is not neccesarily what I feel mine should be protected against, and I will oppose any attempt to enforce anybody else's ideas of what is acceptable on me and mine.
Kids are not yours to control or to insulate, teach them what you think is right, and then let them live.

LaTigresse -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 2:39:48 PM)

I never felt that it was societies responsibility to parent my children. That was my job. Did I do a great job..........shrugging......who knows, I did the best I could. I can tell you one thing for sure, I have two adult children that I actually LIKE. Yes, not just love, but I actually like them. I enjoy being with them, talking to them. I respect them for the adults they have become. I guess I must have done okay........

darkinshadows -> RE: I'm No Prude But somethings wrong with this picture (6/22/2006 3:00:02 PM)

Completely agree with you.
Teach the children responsibility and respect from a young age and they respect themselves a hell of a lot more.
Teach them what reality is and they respect everything alot more.
Children utter these words, because its taboo, because they have no idea what the words or actions even actually mean and the whole history behind it.  Hide it from them, and it because a 'danger', and children love to test, they will do it.  Teach them and give them the choice - and it isn't interesting enough and has lost it's edge.  And most children have the maturity to learn alot.

Peace and Rapture

This is one of the things that often gets me rolling my eyes at how stupid and moronic society is. The furore and witch hunts that go on which are stirred up by the media about paedophilia while the media increasingly sexualise children younger and younger and millions of people ogle the idiot box and appear not to notice the irony of it all.

i think it all comes down to how the child has been raised...  i know my daughter has good morels and yes i know she curses behind my back....  What kid doesn't?

She knows the difference between right and wrong and she knows that if her grandmother hears a curse word or even an unkind word come out of her mouth, she will get either a back hand or a mouth full of soap....

i over a mother teaching her 4 yr old to say "I'm too hot"... and they thought it was funny... i just shock my head...

Everyone has different standards... i personally think that we need to raise the bar a few more feet...

I think someone got my point (even if at the end I went a  little off the deep end.  As did quite a few others did.  LOL.
And I guess I could be accused of being a socialist, I not only care for my child, but I care for every child that occupies this earth.  I only wish society in addition to my parents had cared from the heart for my well being when I was a child.  I stand by my comment that we are a bunch of coconuts.[8D]  If you think you aren't I'm more certain you are.  .....Bunched up knickers to follow?

I'm adding in case some fruits don't understand where I was going with my rant.  I was speaking the confusing messages we send the kids, heck they're confusing me.

This is just too damn funny, guess what's playing in the background right now.  Yep?  Premiscuous Girl.  grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.[X(]

All I have to add is this from C S N & Y.....
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.

I sometimes cry when I read a story now that I loved when I was young and realize how much goddamned Christianity they tried to cram into our bedtime stories.  The Chronicles of Narnia, Pinocchio, Swiss Family Robinson--they're all laced with Christian bullshit, but you don't realize it until you reread them as an adult.
