FR Just as an interesting anecdote, for anyone vaguely considering a visit to Ireland: One thing that I'd considered stereotypical - the myth of 'Irish blarney' - turned out, in fact, to be not. I found that I could go into a supermarket and talk to a checkout assistant and, afterwards, feel a need to consult a dictionary. Likewise getting a paper from a newsagent-cum-sweetshop. The Irish really, *really* do language like no English-speakers I've ever come across. 'Walking dictionaries' are everywhere. It's no wonder to me now that they've produced novelists, poets and playwrights out of all proportion to their numbers. It was a frigging weird experience, that trip.
