It seems the flavor of the month for the GOP (Ted Cruz) has a bit of a problem for becoming President, ...cause he was not born in this country as Fox News questions him about it. Though I think his chances for ever being the front runner where slim to none, it is interesting to see how he responds and how he defines his right to be President.

Cruz attempted to downplay the question and turned to his work "defending the Constitution" in the Senate.

But Hannity went on to note that while while Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban father, Cruz's mother was a U.S. citizen, which led Cruz to agree that he was, in fact, a U.S. "citizen by birth."

Under the Constitution, eligibility for holding the office of the president requires the candidate to be a "natural-born" citizen. So being born on foreign soil, with a mother who is a US citizen now makes you a citizen. Seems they made the choice not to have him born here, perhaps they had no health care in the USA and just wanted to use the health care system in Canada.


Huh, strange how someone not born in the USA can be a "citizen by birth" according to the right, but this rule of thought does not work if you are on the other side of the aisle.

It's not that complicated. To be eligible, one must be a natural born US citizen. If one is born in the US, regardless of the citizenship of one's parents, one is a natural born citizen. If EITHER of one's parents are US citizens, one is a natural born citizen, regardless of where one is born. Both of Goldwater's parents, both of McCain's parents, Obama's mother and apparently Cruz's mother too, were US citizens when they were born. That's ALL it takes. I cannot believe all the repetitive screaming about such a NON-issue.

Same rules apply to both gentlemen.

To be a natural born citizen, both parents must be citizens. If both parents are citizens and the child is born abroad, at least one of the citizen parents must have have previously resided in the United States or its territories.
