Actually, the legality of the marriage would have played out in Obama's favor as well.

Moonhead -> RE: Ohhh Noooo seems the GOP is supporting a Candian for President (3/20/2013 12:14:28 PM)

Only if the people bitching about his being elected were paying any attention to the facts, and I haven't really got the impression from all of the histrionic screaming the Birthers have been coming out with for the last four or five years.
[:D]

And here you have it.....it all comes down to race....

why else would a group question one persons right to be President (black) and not another (white)...when after all the latter admits to being born outside the USA....

proof has been provided, and me thinks the SCOTUS would have been brought in, if anything more then a political scam was in play...but still...there are those in the states where they cut education funding still believe

slvemike4u -> RE: Ohhh Noooo seems the GOP is supporting a Candian for President (3/20/2013 12:45:09 PM)

Fuck this whole conversation....
What I want to know is whether the Republican Party could really be so stupid as to "double down" on whacky and actually entertain any serious though of putting forth a putz like Cruz as their nominee ?

Whose driving the bus with these folks, will the far right actually persevere ? Or will the "establishment"(the folks Sarah Palin keeps castigating)Republicans take back their party from the fringe tin hat tea bag idiots ?

lmao... so you're saying it comes down to race? The Birthers griped about a guy who is half black and half white and haven't yet griped about a guy who is half latino and half white? Apparently, it's not a minority thing... lmao!

And, before we even get into whether or not the Birthers are hypocrites, when did their "movement" come to the fore?

summer 2008.

And, it started with the PUMA's.

So, if the Birthers throw their support behind candidate Cruz (we're still 3 years away from the campaign season!?!?!?!?!?!) without admitting they were incorrect in their analysis of OBama's eligibility, then, yes, they would definitely be hypocrites.

For now, though, they are simply wrong.

"we're still three years away from campaign season"

Really ?
In what reality is that true ?

In this country "campaign season" 2016 started the day after election 2012 !

And the Democrats quickly distanced themselves from such claims.

Who was it who embraced it full force and used it as their mantra ... and still do?

Christ, I've been hearing this from one side or the other since 1964. Barry Goldwater was supposedly not eligible because Arizona wasn't a state when he was born there. John McCain wasn't eligible because he was born in Panama. And we've all heard the endless crap about Obama.

It's not that complicated. To be eligible, one must be a natural born US citizen. If one is born in the US, regardless of the citizenship of one's parents, one is a natural born citizen. If EITHER of one's parents are US citizens, one is a natural born citizen, regardless of where one is born. Both of Goldwater's parents, both of McCain's parents, Obama's mother and apparently Cruz's mother too, were US citizens when they were born. That's ALL it takes. I cannot believe all the repetitive screaming about such a NON-issue.

tazzygirl -> RE: Ohhh Noooo seems the GOP is supporting a Candian for President (3/20/2013 5:33:29 PM)

That is the OPs point.. and the hypocrisy of it all.

I know who use it, and at the end of my post, I acknowledged that they may still be hypocrites, but, for now, they are simply just wrong.

I'm not a Birther. I disagree with their claims. I don't consider Obama anything other than a natural-born US citizen. Did you see where I discredited the Democrats because it started with them? Know why? Because, to me, it didn't matter. It started with the PUMA's. They were wrong. The Birther Movement took over, and they were and are still wrong.

It seems the flavor of the month for the GOP (Ted Cruz) has a bit of a problem for becoming President, ...cause he was not born in this country as Fox News questions him about it. Though I think his chances for ever being the front runner where slim to none, it is interesting to see how he responds and how he defines his right to be President.

"Are you eligible to run for president? You were born in Canada," Hannity asked.

Cruz attempted to downplay the question and turned to his work "defending the Constitution" in the Senate.

But Hannity went on to note that while while Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban father, Cruz's mother was a U.S. citizen, which led Cruz to agree that he was, in fact, a U.S. "citizen by birth."

Under the Constitution, eligibility for holding the office of the president requires the candidate to be a "natural-born" citizen. So being born on foreign soil, with a mother who is a US citizen now makes you a citizen. Seems they made the choice not to have him born here, perhaps they had no health care in the USA and just wanted to use the health care system in Canada.

Huh, strange how someone not born in the USA can be a "citizen by birth" according to the right, but this rule of thought does not work if you are on the other side of the aisle.

Just like so many things in life "natural born citizen" doesn't mean born on these shores.

(And for the record, before anyone poses the question.....if asked....I will not run).

McCain was born in Panama and was eligible to run for president. None of the Right questioned his right to be president.

Or the left.....it pretty much was not an issue.

Same rules apply to both gentlemen.

To be a natural born citizen, both parents must be citizens. If both parents are citizens and the child is born abroad, at least one of the citizen parents must have have previously resided in the United States or its territories.

No such law exists.

FR

Birthers among Republicans have always been a minority of douchebags, who were douchebags before they got on this, but the media just fell in love with them, and the libs are always in a need of a new smear to cast on Republicans and conservatives at large.

With the left on the other hand, I'm sure such a line of attack would be presented as reasonable and appropriately concerned.

It's a values, vs values of the day, thing. No telling what they'll be claiming to believe next.

I may need to print up a, "keep your hands off my body," bumper sticker, when they come for our super-sized beverages in California.

The response you quoted addressed the subject of children born abroad [U.S. Code: Title 8, 1401].

Some people would rather scream about this stuff than real issues. And you left out George Romney whose parents were in Mexico when he was born and both were Citzens.
