EternalHoH -> Univ of Tenn 'sex week' funding pulled (3/21/2013 3:19:48 PM)

UT in Knoxville is in the midst of a controversy right now over a planned "Sex Week' happening in april.

Unfortunately, in the TN legislature, religious republicans hold a brand new supermajority, and when confronted, UT officials have pulled the portion of funding that was to come from student activity fees. The group organizing the event has set up a fundraiser to replace the roughly $12,000 shortfall due to the pullback of funds.

TN religious politicians are on a tear right now, presently going after Vanderbuilt University in Nashville (a private university) because it adopted a policy where organizations on campus had to accept all newcomers, much to the regret of religious groups that still wanted to discriminate against gays. So the righteous TN supermajority struck back, passing an anti-all-comers bill that Governor Bill Haslam vetoed over an opinion by the state Attorney General over not passing a constitutionality test. So the religious supermajority is now going after Vanderbuilt again, in hopes of abolishing its on-campus police force, which would then force the private university to take public money for police services, which would give the state some traction in how this private enterprise runs its business.

Among the politicians promoting the most resistance is Stacey Campfield, who obviously has a fear of gays considering his long line of introduced bills that target gays.

My guess is UT leaders saw what the politicians were doing to Vandy, and opted to not go down that road.

But if any of you want to donate to their efforts, feel free.

Explain exactly why any organization supported by taxpayers should be able to reject anyone who wants to be involved?

Then what business is it of yours what rules a private institution implements?
