Ok, so I have a friend who spells the short form of "vibrator" as "vib". V-I-B.

It annoys the heck outta me whenever he does it. Grrrr!

I've always been taught it was spelled "vibe". V-I-B-E.

He says he spells it without the "e" because it's the same reasoning as that "mic" (microphone) isn't spelled "mice" in the short form.

So, who's right?

You are.

Might not want to take my word for it; according to another thread, I'm just a racist, I don't know if I can make it to actual Nazi status.

While you are correct that the proper "short form" is vibe, it's more important that the vibe is not short. Wouldn't you agree?

Phoenetically speaking, the letter "c" can be pronounced like an "s" or a "k". The "c" is soft ("s" sound) when the next letter is an "e". That is why "mic" doesn't have an "e" at the end. It changes the "c" from a short, hard sound to a soft, long sound. Otherwise we are talking about rodents and not microphones.

By the same token, the letter "i" has long and short sounds as well. The word "vibe" needs the "e" on the end to make the "i" a long sound.

This is the long way of telling you that you are right and your friend is wrong.

Thank you, Level.

couple4u2join, thank you. Short vibes? Umm, I think it's safe to say I prefer the real thing instead these days.

O, and welcome to the boards. :)

Shar, and searching, thanks!

That's what I was trying to tell him, but you explained it better, searching.

If without an e, it would rhyme with bib. The e at the end makes it rhyme with the second syllable in imbibe.

A bit of a tangent, If anyone notices me making
the same grammar mistakes repeatedly, I'd
appreciate it if you could send me a quick cmail
to let me know.

I find grammar nazis a bit annoying when they
nitpick in threads but I definitely would like to
know if I'm doing stuff wrong.

Thanks.

Does it really take that long to spell out entire words? Apparently so.

The short way is the dictionary.

mic - informal - microphone
vib - No results found for vib: Did you mean vibe?

All of the above.  I.e., mic and vibe.  Poll results show it as well.  100% for you, m'dear.  Having a 2nd minor in linguistics, I especially like the explanation by searching4mysir.  She saved me key-strokes, y'know?

Dear grammar Nazis . . . It's vib not vibe unless you're talking about sticking an electric xylophone (vibraphone) in your snatch!

Being a musician and having grown up listening to jazz, I can tell you unequivocally that a "vibe" is short for vibraphone. Vibe is also short for vibration (metaphysical or otherwise) but not for vibrator.

Having worked as a webmaster in the porn industry, like your friend, I always used "vib" as the abbreviation for vibrator not "vibe". Because of the other replies in this thread to the contrary, I just now looked it up to make sure. Yup, the porn industry uses the 'vib' abbreviation and the only professional instances of "Vibe and sex" I could find was from "We Vibe" or personal posts, not professional sites. You can do your own quick google for "Vibe + sex" vs "Vib + sex" and see that the industry standard is "vib". So your friend is right and those porn sites I built in the past are up to the industry standard.

Thank you, all. :)

An electric xylophone? Lol, only you, RS.

When I asked him where he learned "vib" from, he said it was from all those years (literally) reading erotica sites.

This was my understanding, as well. I've seen it spelled both ways, though - vibe and vib - and to be honest, I don't really care how people spell it lol. I work in IT and see all sorts of abbreviations that aren't phonetically sound.
