DomPersona -> Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/25/2013 10:01:53 AM)

I figure that CM is a great place to get a lot of people to see this and possibly help. Not only is this important to organic farmers like myself, but also our food, children, and future as human beings:

Petition: http://wh.gov/sLqC

Occupy the Farm Bill

Call President Barack Obama 202-456-1111
Call the Congressional Switchboard 202-224-3121

Congress succeeded in passing Section 735, aka the Monsanto Protection Act, in the Continuing Resolution spending bill.

Contact President Obama before he signs it and HR 933 becomes law.

With the passage of the Monsanto Protection Act in Congress, biotech lobbyists are one step closer to making sure that their new GMO crops can evade any serious scientific, regulatory review and circumvents separation of powers by evading the judicial process.

This dangerous provision, the Monsanto Protection Act, strips judges of their constitutional mandate to protect consumer rights and the environment, while opening up the floodgates for the planting of new untested genetically engineered crops, endangering farmers, consumers and the environment.

Call President Obama at (202) 456-1111 and tell him to VETO HR 933.

Sign the White house Petition here:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/remove-section-735-aka-monsanto-protection-act-hr-933/T8QYzYZg

WHAT TO SAY?
President Barack Obama
(202) 456-1111
"Hi, my name is _______ from _________ (city and/or state) I'm calling to ask President Obama to veto HR 933, the short term spending bill due to the inclusion of a dangerous rider by the Senate, The Monsanto Protection Act,that is harmful to our environment, family farmers and citizens ."

The passage of Section 735 in the Senate is an outrage against family farmers and our Constitution, undermining judicial review and our democratic rights in favor of corporate handouts.

As your constituent, I believe it's important that President Obama supports basic oversight of the agricultural biotech industry, not less. It's important to me and my family what we eat everyday, and biotech lobbyists shouldn't be allowed to corrupt the review process for new biotech crops.

Please remember to thank the staff person answering the phone and President Obama telling them that you support openness and transparency in food labeling and government.

Thank you.

I signed the petition:

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Remove Section 735, aka the Monsanto Protection Act, from HR 933
This provision is a ploy to continue to sell genetically engineered (GMO) seeds even after a court of law has found they have been illegally approved by the USDA.

The judicial review process is an essential element of U.S law and serves as a vital check on any federal agency decision that may negatively impact human health, the environment, or the livelihood of farmers, yet this provision seeks an immunity to such judicial review by preemptively deciding that the industry can set its own rules.

This provision forces the USDA to immediately approve any permits at the industry's request, putting industry completely in charge by allowing for a “back door approval” mechanism.

We petition to urge President Obama refuse to sign HR 933 into law until Section 735 is removed from the bill.

I for one, actually, don't give a shit.

DarkSteven -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/25/2013 6:43:47 PM)

I'm opposed to anything Monsanto does.

SeekingTrinity -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/25/2013 7:35:47 PM)

I too do not trust Monsanto either. Way too many controversies and skeletons in their closet to give them a world to operate in free of oversight.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/25/2013 7:39:42 PM)

I've been trying to sign the petition but it hasn't been working for me. Could be my connection.

descrite -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/25/2013 9:56:48 PM)

I would like to support a similar bill, halting the unfettered genetic experimentation among humans.

Namely, I want to make sure the courts are involved in deciding who has children and who doesn't, by directly interfering with and supervising any couple that intends to reproduce.

Maybe when everyone gets all done being spooked by the scary-scary science of genetic enhancement, people will stop starving to death. No, wait-- my bad: we have more than enough food right now, but some Luddites want to prevent its export and distribution to those starving people, by labeling it "GMO" and diseeminating fear instead of calories.

If I invent a new product, it should be mine. Some yokel spouting witch-doctory crap about how my new product MIGHT cause harm to someone down the line shouldn't prevent me from making, owning, and selling my product.

Bacon is bad for me, too. But I will keep eating it. And spit in the eye of anyone who tries to prevent me. Go 'way, archaic-nannies.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/26/2013 1:19:11 PM)

Done.

Monsanto can go f*ck themselves.

And des, the problem with GMO outdoor crops is they cannot be prevented from cross-pollinating where they may not be wanted. That infringes on the rights of organic farmers who are doing all they can to keep things kosher. Not cool, not cool at all.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/27/2013 11:41:04 AM)

It would seem this act has been signed, as of late last night. Yay...

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/27/2013 11:42:25 AM)

Hooray for the little guys!

You have a right to grow what you want but you don't have a right to screw with my crops.
No means no when it comes to involuntary pollination.[8D]

The main problem with GM food is that it is leading to minimal genetic variation among food crops. That is asking for disaster.
Genetic variation is the only thing that stands between the human race and a future famine when a new plant virus makes its appearance.
You show you don't have a lot knowledge of botany.

But, my name isn't "_______ from _________"

theRose4U -> RE: Please help veto the Monsanto Protection Act. (3/27/2013 8:08:34 PM)

I'm very familiar with red star corn, the issues & even politics involved. Saddest part is when the god father of GMO, the guy that started it all is against monsanto & his own farms are now organic. He was so upset by "the red star corn incident" that he started seed banking to be able to "reset" the DNA of crops.
Doc frankenfood himself wants the monster put back in the lab.
