so most everyone I message almost always say the same thing, "I don't check the site much please email me at blahblah.com and we can set up a place to meet. number one who is going to meet someone without even talking first, number two why take it off the site? they always say something like I think we would be a great match but I notice they don't even look at my profile, my first thought is these are email farmers just trying to get my email, is this basically true? sorry if this is the wrong thread I wasn't sure where to post, the number of these are astounding nearly 9 out of 10 people who respond.

Email farmers, people attempting to scam you...

Just don't do anything you're uncomfortable with or that sets off alarm bells. If you want to make sure, you can set up an email account solely for use on those kinds of contacts. You know, say your typical email address is [email protected]. You create a secondary email account that's something like [email protected].

But yeah, if they're saying that you're perfect from the get-go, or if you're getting such high response rates from them...they're likely not what you're looking for.

thanks for the response, I haven't emailed any of them just been treating as scammers guess i'll keep on the same routine.

I see profiles with text like that. I just pass them on by.

On a related note (another "tell" for scammers) And one probably employed for the same addy-harvesting purpose...

CM seems to include some (but not all) UK listings in with Canadian ones. Makes it confusing, since we named so many places after places in Britain.

I'm in Canada. A month or two ago I saw a bunch of new (f sub) profiles show up over a night or two. They claimed to be in cities that ARE in England (and aren't, as far as I know) dittoed in Canada. Like Hownslow, Ipswitch or whatever.

Different pix. Different text. Few contained email addies.

What was the "tell"?

About 20 profiles...all with line breaks so that each line was only about 4 or 5 words long.

The takeaway: If you're gonna be a scammer...at least be GOOD at it. That was just clumsy.

OP, you may want to pay particular attention to number three under the "how to avoid being scammed" section. Here is that portion:

Look at it this way, there are many more men on this site then women, if there is someone from this under-represented group of people saying that they'll meet you...that just doesn't make sense. Getting an email from a woman is not a common occurrence, getting an email and then it's one saying that they want to meet you- there is no way that is a woman available for real time interaction. Believe me, women don't have to go looking for any old person to meet up with. They don't ever even go around messaging men - they get quite enough mail and offers as it is.

Not for nothing, but you are 43 years old, you found your way to this site, so it isn't your first day on the internet. So really? You couldn't figure this out without a general consensus from the general population?

I've tried to grow vegetables by email, or, in a few cases, simply by being online.

To date it has not been entirely effective.

to all the helpful people thanks:) the question wasn't is it a scam it was are they farming email addresses or some other type of scam, and if so what type, yes im 43 LafayetteLady and probably more man than you could handle, these are called forums for a reason so people can post, I was polite in asking and I read the scam link it doesn't get specific, as far as punctuation, If you cant read my post why bother posting? as a web master ive ran many forums over the years so for those who are insulted I posted the topic sorry for wasting 2kb of database space.

Yep, that's asking if it is a scam. What type is irrelevant. Now do try to put your big boy pants on and act like an adult, rather than a child who snuck on his parents computer and doesn't know about internet scams.

Oh, and for the record, if you really think that these emails you are receiving are simply farming for email addresses, you likely lack what it takes to be a dominant.

I don't know if I was one of the helpful people or not, but I'll say you are welcome. As to the second part, exactly how would people on the forums know what type of scam it would be? What I mean is, if I was one of the folks specifically collecting email addresses, do you really think I'd give away the game on the forums?

This is just ridiculous and rude. If you want your question taken seriously, and it really was a very basic, simple, elementary level question, try not going in places where people would laugh in your face if you said it in person and it's even sillier on the internet.

There's no way for the site or the members (two different entities) to tell you what specific reason people are contacting you if they have ulterior motives. That would be asking us to read the mind of a third party. Think about that. If I asked you a question about what I was receiving in My email, unless you sent it, you wouldn't really have a concrete answer for Me, would you?

The comment about being a web master, blah, blah, only makes the poor sentence structure and bad punctuation come across in an even worse light. With such a background, you should be well aware that such things gives the reader a less than stellar view of your level of intelligence. On a written medium, that's the first thing somebody is going to notice when it isn't done well.

FR-If they are trying to get you offsite immediately it SHOULD raise red flags. There is no charge for mails here, and it is possible to get email notifications whenever you have mail on the site. So, theoretically, they would never have to check the site in vain. We do have "users" strictly out to get money (fakes, who woulda thunk it?? ) 9 times out of 10 you go off site, and all of a sudden you get mails to join other sites, or that "user" tells yuou to email them yuou have to sign up to another site to their "page" and all of a sudden you are being asked for all kinds of personal information. My suggestion....don't do it. In addition , in addition to hitting the report button on that mail, write Support and tell them that userxxx is trying to get you offsite immediately to communicate.

I mean, come on dude. Look at yourself, your age, your appearance, the lack of appearance of wealth in your pictures, the appearance of poor intelligence your writing style indications and think to yourself... why on Earth would an 18 year old supermodel lookalike chick want to be with me?

Answer: to scam you out of money...

If it's a caliber of girl you don't think you'd be able to land when meeting her in a vanilla bar, you're not going to get her online either. This isn't a magic lala-land place that suddenly makes you appealing to partners whom otherwise wouldn't have come near you with a 10 foot pole.
If it seems too good to be true, it's is... especially online.

You're having trouble with scammers, because you keep mailing scammers... simple as that.
