Esinn -> Killer Robots, we need them why? (3/26/2013 11:52:57 PM)

I did a search and did not find any discussion on this. It should be an important political discussion. While some of this is older. I linked it because I did not see anyone typing about it. Even if there is no discussion. The links are worth some time.
FUNNY PETMAN
Stair Climbing
Cheetah rip off your face
throw cynderblock at yourface dog
DARPA NAV
VoiceActivated Killer Dog
WatchYourNeghibor Get Naked Robot

This isn't 5% of it. Firstly we can not afford it. For a lot of this stuff receipts are public. I am sure some is black budget. We already have secure methods to do these tasks. . Many of these robots are going to be used domestically - yet they are battlefield designed, hmm. We just do not need it - especially domestically

The DARPA failure rate is through the roof, did I mention we can not afford it?

The most costly is "regulatory capture of the scientific mind". Through fear & false patriotism the greatest minds in science are grabbed, nabbed and put in NAVY or darpa lab - really. Cancer kills 4,000 people a week. Their are imminent national security threats.

There should be a natural transition into domestic spying/surveillance. NSA, Stellar Wind, Deep packet inspection or Privacy being a myth now a days. Your government is suspicious at best. None of this ends well. We also need to talk about the 30,000 UAS/UV the government wants flying in our skies - we can not afford it.

Here is an impressive video of DARPA projects. Same damn impressive machinery there. The "Sand Flea" was amazing (last demo of the video). PETman's lateral stability is great, but the stairclimber was far more impressive, imo.

The Disaster Transport CAAT? Damn good idea IMO. Can you not see the benefits for disaster relief?

Raytheon's EXOS 2 Exoskeleton.

HULC.

Yes, all these things are being researched for military use. Yes, all these things may, in fact, end up being used within US borders. Yes, all these things may end up in our daily lives with or without knowing it.

Is that a bad thing? That's more debatable. Do you like your internet? GPS? Microwave? Kevlar? There is a vast list of things that have been developed for military use that is now in our daily lives, and our lives have actually improved. Neat, huh?

Is there the possibility of government tyranny with new military tech? Sure. It's not the tech that is the problem, though. The problem is who is using the tech. Imagine the "tyranny" of taking the HULC suit and adapting it to a patient with MS, MD, Parkinson's, etc. Return relatively normal ambulation to people with a medical condition. TYRANNY!!!

The innovations and developments in powered prosthetics is simply amazing, too. They are already working on improving technology (as opposed to figuring it out and developing it) to link a powered prosthetic to the human nervous system.

Oh, the TYRANNY!!

Fuck these people. We don't want TYRANNY!!!

You're confusing "need" and "want".
Nobody needs killer robots (whether they work or not) but many fancy them because they're killer robots.
See? Killer robots. Killer robots.
Just say it out loud: how fucking cool is that?

Daleks are cooler.

Very true, but Hammerstein can get upstairs.

subrob1967 -> RE: Killer Robots, we need them why? (3/27/2013 6:55:18 AM)

I'd say it's obvious Darpa hasn't read Asimov's rules for robots.

Moonhead -> RE: Killer Robots, we need them why? (3/27/2013 7:48:16 AM)

The one that no other SF writer since has paid any attention to except to take the piss out of them, you mean?
Yeah, whyever would DARPA ignore those? You'll be saying that the robots they're designing don't have positronic brains next...

Cylon Meatjobs were the absolute best, though. I'd take an 8 with a side of 6 over a Dalek any day.

If we don't invent these things how else is the world as we know it going to end? On the whole I am a bit disappointed at the current lack of killer robots.

We are a bit behind schedule as we should have invented skynet by now.

Well, once we get it up and running, we can go back and start sooner, right?

FullCircle -> RE: Killer Robots, we need them why? (3/27/2013 6:19:41 PM)

Apparently there is this rule that you can't travel further back in time than the age of the time machine. I think it is because we haven't yet made any sightings of people from the future. Logically if people were able to travel back in time to anytime then we'd probably accidentally have seen one of them by now.

How do you know you haven't? They could have done plenty of research and show up in period dress, blending in with the crowd.

Well I planted a time capsule in my garden purporting to give co-ordinates to a juicy steak but as of yesterday the steak has still gone uneaten. It can't be eaten in the future because by then it will cause severe food poisoning.

It's a popular sf conceit derived from quantum theory: the assumption is that as soon as a functioning time machine is fired up, that becomes the earliest historical point it's possible to visit, and everyone from the future will turn up there at once.
(The thing that's worth bearing in mind about this notion is that it's most popular with the sort of SF writer who likes to pretend that they understand theoretical physics and so pass off their daft notions as being plausible, while failing to understand that Schrodinger's cat in a box was a demonstration of how absurd he thought quantum theory was, not a demonstration of how it works. It's pretty much a post millennial version of all those "hard SF" books that go into great and often tedious detail about alien ecologies after the author has broken several laws of physics to get the human characters there.)

We don't need facts in fiction. When you watch Downton Abbey do all the people have missing teeth and retched skin boils? No.

jlf1961 -> RE: Killer Robots, we need them why? (3/27/2013 7:05:20 PM)

We need killer robots, battle mechs, 200 ton nuclear fusion tanks and antimatter bombs for me to take over the planet.

Oh it's out there it's just a whole lot more stealth than we assumed, way the fuck up there but still...in the sky.

Of course we don't.
Sadly, you get a lot of SF writers who seem to believe otherwise, and try to gloss over what ludicrous bollocks many of their plot devices are. You'd almost think the poor dears are embarrassed that they're writing fiction not science textbooks. Personally, I find this hilarious as for me SF is all about the ludicrous bollocks and daft plot devices. Give me Alfred Bester or Phillip K Dick over Hal Clement or Ben Bova any day. The only writer of real, no messin' hard SF I can think of who doesn't break any laws of science in his fiction is JG Ballard, and then only in the '70s stuff (Crash, High Rise, The Concrete Island and a lot of his short fiction of the same vintage), that a lot of the hard SF twats aren't even going to admit is any sort of science fiction.
