He is a Jesuit. The Jesuits, I believe, own things in common but don't really have personal possessions. It isn't a vow of poverty, per se.

Oh my God, teh Jesuits are Commies.[8D]

LOL...perhaps, but no one is forced to be a Jesuit [;)]

Just thought I'd toss some levity in. I disapprove of the institution because of its past abuses and present political meddling but I see no reason for the man in charge to die needlessly at the hands of a crazy.
Does that make sense?

The Catholic Church declared communism as a "Deadly Sin" at the start of the 30th century. And they embraced Hitler and Fascism in the 30's...of course...we aren't supposed to know that as they are such little Angels...well ...when they have finshed fucking choir boys.

It did no such thing. We haven't even REACHED the 30th century. They also did not embrace Hitler. I think you need new "history" books.

Sorry I meant 20th...and yes...I'm afraid the Catholic church was complicent with Mussolini and the wave of fascism that swept the European mainland at the time. Oh...er I have a degree in philosophy and history. I have read the the history books that are now swept under the table and "politely ignored" in deference to the Catholic church. Next you will be telling me that there the rape of young boys by preists and the the kidnapping of children and women in Ireland was just false history and fact too.

Why single out Ireland? Admittedly the levels of abuse were particularly horrifying there, but Ireland was far from the sole actor in this sordid story.

Catholic clergy abused young boys and girls all over Europe, North America and Australiasia. For all I know, many other places too. The numbers involved run into the thousands. With many hundreds, if not thousands more clergy involved in cover ups, shuffling the offending pedos around from one church or school to another when the abuse could no longer be swept under the carpet at a local level, and even more clergy involved in shabby disgusting treatment of survivors who sought apologies, compensation and admissions of guilt by offenders. The guilty stretch all the way from local parishes on several continents to the highest levels of the Vatican.

Even today, several decades after these abuses, and the scale of abuse became a matter of public knowledge and scandal, these matters are still not completely or satisfactorily resolved - to the eternal shame of those responsible. Let's hope that this new Pope finally resolves these matters in their entirety and takes steps to ensure that scandals like this never re-occur. I wish I could feel more optimistic that this will happen.

MS01 Doesn't care, he just wants them burned at the stake....

I too wish they would officially adress this. But sadly, I don't think that will ever happen unless priests are allowed to marry again. Funny how a single man, who's sole relationship experience is boiled down to a few self-inflicted hand-jobs or worse a pedophilic rape give marital advise to couples.....

it amazes me to the point of humor when you see the surprise and shock of the media when reporting on this over the last two weeks.

It amazes me what passes for poverty and humility for a Pope. He used to cook his own meals! He drove his own car!

You need a perspective.

A cardinal of an archdiocese is the spiritual "leader" of often many millions of people. The equivalent place would be as a governor of one of your states, the leader of a small nation, the mayor of a supercity like New York, London or Shanghai; or the CEO of a very large corporation.

How many of your state governors still cook their own food or drive their own vehicles, or eschew the governor's palace to live in a small apartment as Pope Francis did, even as a cardinal?

And the equal in the way of a CEO certainly has limousines, and food handlers, and the opulent corporate mansions and penthouse condominiums.

Your appeal to authority (your degree) aside, it is quite possible you are correct. It is what it is. Another point of view.

Just like Cardinal Richelieu, who owned Louis the thirteenth, and France?
[:D]

I would not speak too loudly about what went on in the relationship between the church and the French state in centuries past, if I lived in a kingdom that still had several dozen archbishops as ex officio members of my legislative assembly, and also had my hereditary head of state as "pope" of my constitutionally enshrined state church.

Tweakabelle. I agree entirely..the abuse and the export of chirldren to Catholic abuse in Australia was horrifific. It verges on the unbelievable...but it happened. But now the Catholic church and Oz govt apologieses for it. Oh well..that's cool..you apologised. They will make apologises the next time they are caught too. Still..as long as they apologise then that is OK. Wankers :( grrrr

MorningStar01 -> RE: A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/28/2013 11:24:59 AM)

Oh...on that note...who thinks that Catholic priests and nuns that have abused chilrdlen all around the world should have a cactuss stuck up their arse and told it is because the Holy Mother wishes it? I do.

Why limit it to Catholic priests and nuns? Why not ANYONE who has abused children around the world?

Pedophiles are attracted to pre-pubescent children. They don't have an attraction to women. Getting married solves nothing. Besides there are hundreds, if not thousands, of married priests.

I don't know how allowing RC clergy to marry would affect individual abusers.

But ...

I think it could have made a huge difference in terms of the cover-up. Bishops and priests with children of their own would have been far less cavalier about simply passing abusers on to new parishes. Folks whose first response is "Damn, that could have been my kid!" would have a stake in the issue in a way the current hierarchy never manifested.

MorningStar01 -> RE: A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/28/2013 11:39:16 AM)

Searching. You have a point...it is all wrong from any race or religion....but you have to admit that male Catholic Priests seem to be experts in abuse...hmmm..I say male but then that is all the Catholic Church is full of. Doing as they please...it does make me angry :(

I think one thing the celibacy rules do is offer those who have "unholy urges" a supposed refuge. The rules attract misfits and those who are of the opinion that if they take a vow of celibacy, they can beat those urges.
Maybe it works sometimes but when it fails, it fails spectacularly.
There is also the old saw of "pedophiles were frequently molested as children". Those who were molested by the authorities of the church would be more likely to end up in a position in the church.
Maybe now that things have been dragged out into the open kicking and screaming the cycle can be broken.
Allowing priests to marry would deepen the talent pool.

Not in the Catholic church.

Technically vicars aren't priests, either: I've noticed that anglicans can be every bit as snotty about that point as catholics.

All Catholic priests take a vow of poverty along with ones of chastity and obedience

And occasionally, some even conform to those vows.
