Poverty in the suburbs is growing at an alarming rate.

I have seen coverage on both t.v. and in print, about this increasing phenomena lately.

What is "causing" this alarming and rapidly growing rate of poverty in the suburbs?

NBC In Plain Sight- Poverty hits America's Suburbs

Money MSn- Now Suburbia is where the poor are

I caught this on t.v. just the other night.
This is a short "must see" video link below! *Inside NJ tent city.*

*Inside NJ Tent City*/ Ocean County Suburban Homeless Tent City Community

Million dollar question, "Why are these people homeless?"
Shades of Tom Joad and one of my old favorites the Grapes of Wrath!
The Joads did not have a piano like that one on the old truck.

What is causing the sharp rise in poverty in the suburbs?

Could it be............. a lack of jobs?
Specifically "well paying" jobs?

Well butter my biscuit, that might be it!

Same as urban poverty, inflation, no jobs, no housing, insufficient charitable or govt. programs to help.

Far too little money in the hands of far, far too many people.

The American business community has a culture or actual fiduciary responsibility to NOT serve society but only itself unless forced to as they are to an extent in other western countries...somewhat greater than the US.

Suburban poverty 30 years ago created the suburban nomad...moving from room to room in search of a place to lay their head.

I just don't have the energy for this one tonight, Mari (it's been flipping "hair on fire," all day long). It's a good topic. I may have to wake it up next week, if it isn't too far gone. I just saw the latest unemployment numbers on the local front page. We are running right around 16%, in the suburban community I call home. More to come, from what I hear.

See the poll, for the artful combination of all three.

G'nite.

Funny thing, Mari. After days like these, I'll often seek out some inspiring perspective. Turns out what I came across tonight is something you might enjoy very much as well.

Lack of high paying jobs sure does play a part. (Whose fault is it they don't have high paying jobs?)

But, I think that is only part of the answer. The overall economic shit hole we still haven't come out of, is playing a part in it, too. Add in weather phenomena and this and that and the other thing, too.

People left the urban areas for the suburbs for various reasons that can be generalized into "a better life" category be it for them, or a better life for their kids. It could have been for better schools, lower taxes, etc. And, I would not be surprised to find that the subprime mess plays it's part in those people not being able to afford to live out there. Move out of your city centers and you might just find that you use a lot more gas to get to work, and gas is expensive (and not consistently priced), which adds another layer of cost.

Whose fault is it? Ebil crapitalist swine? Maybe some. They were there before now, too. Big Gov? Some. Big Finance? More.

Whose fault is it when a company doesn't find your skill set to be worth the cost of hiring you at a high wage?

Very interesting speech, Rich. I'm a lot more skeptical than Bono showed himself to be, but it is good news.

What is causing the sharp rise in poverty in the suburbs?

Maybe I'm too simple of a man to understand the vast complexities of the financial world. But honestly, I like "follow the money" as a simple answer to a lot of things. In this case, the answer is "the job creators" are causing poverty.

There is a tiny segment of the American population which is getting richer. Everyone else is getting poorer. The ones who are getting richer also conveniently happen to be the ones who were already rich (which equates to powerful). You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out what's going on.

Jeff, what is preventing those without a job from starting a company? It could be as simple as being an area handyman, could it not? Your basic plant maintenance man with some years under his belt in that position would have lots of skills and knowledge about mechanics and such. A hotel maintenance guy would make an even better home handyman. Shovel snow. Landscape. Is it too much to ask someone to create your own job if one isn't available? Bill Gates and Steve Jobs started in their garages. Will it be easy? No. Will it be easier to prosper compared to sitting around and moping? Yeah. Start a damn janitorial service and clean houses or after-hours office cleaning. Shit, man, there are lots of things for people to do.

the union of government/corp/bank.

The corps were the only ones who had to pay taxes when this country was started. The reason for that is they have all the leverage. They can kill any business by using simple attrition alone. The gov regulates individuals through these corporations. SHow me a corp that will go to bat for your rights. Hell they are tax collectors for the gov because the gub says they have to withhold!

Its mission creep, starts out with poor and works its way up, its slow enough that people never get hit with shell shock and pick up arms against their oppressors. Over a hundred years rich countries are converted to banana republics.

we see it in here all the time!

The same people that are crying for entitlements at twice +++ the cost of direct dealing are crying that there are no good paying jobs. the irony!

What is causing the sharp rise in poverty in the suburbs?

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - A national survey found 301,874 "zombie" properties dotting the U.S. landscape in which homeowners in foreclosure have moved out, leaving vacant property susceptible to vandalism and degradation.

Florida tops the list of zombie properties with 90,556 vacant homes in foreclosure, according to a foreclosure inventory released on Thursday by RealtyTrac, a real estate information company in Irvine, California.

Illinois and California ranked a distant second and third with 31,668 and 28,821 zombie properties respectively on the list.

The number of homes overall in foreclosure or bank-owned rose by 9 percent to 1.5 million properties nationally in the first quarter of 2013 compared to a year ago, according to RealtyTrac.

Another 10.9 million homeowners nationwide remain at risk because they owe more than their property is worth, according to company vice president Daren Blomquist.

RealtyTrac for the first time analyzed data on zombie properties after a Reuters' special report in January examined the special problem of zombie titles, Blomquist said.

Reuters revealed the plight of people who walked away from their homes not realizing that their names remained on the deed and that they were financially liable for taxes and other bills related to the abandoned property.

In some cases, homeowners vacated after receiving a notice from the bank of a planned foreclosure sale, only to find out later the bank never followed through.

Zombie properties can be easy to spot as they deteriorate into neighborhood eyesores and havens for criminal activity.

Starting a company without capital is not going to save the house that was foreclosed or pay the credit card debt that was accumulated. People were over their heads in debt when they were let go from jobs in 2008/2009. Many of them middle aged or near retirement age with their 401Ks shattered.

Gates and Jobs had the benefit of a rising economy in the '80s and families who provided them home, food and clothing. Neither of them had a family to support or a mortgage to pay. Neither of them had any real world responsibilities. Unrealistic comparison, DS.

Did you take a look at the 3 minute video I posted?

Did you read about the middle aged woman living in tent city who lost a great paying job when her job was outsourced to China?
