Ok this is just to cute not to share
http://www.wimp.com/babypanda/

As an aside, Toronto Zoo was recently sent a pair of young Pandas, as part of the conservation effort by the chinese, they are going to be here for five years and hopefully will breed.
I have a soft spot for the pandas since I was tiny and remember seeing them in london zoo as a child. I hope the breeding/conservation is successful because travelling to see them in china is not in my future.
I hope you enjoy:)

pandas are great. however, for every panda outside of china it costs £1million per panda per year. so that zoo has to pay two million to china every year just to rent them. also, if they do breed that baby automatically belongs to china, and has that wonderful price tag attached to it. that is aside of the £800,000 a year it costs to feed each one too.

i do wonder how much more would be done to promote breeding outside of china if it wasn't so expensive to rent them in the first place. i'm all up for the conservation of them, but at that cost i wonder whether it will ever happen where the panda is safe.

Its a government control thing. In the big scheme of things a million bucks doesn't matter to the chinese government one way or another. However, to a zoo wanting to increase attendance, needing to upgrade facilities & budget for the special feeding habits...it makes them take a long hard look at their application.

Yep, TO zoo has spent 8 million on upgrades, fed ex will be shipping in bamboo, its been reported that the million a year to the Chinese has been "waived".
But I trust harpers word as much as I trust bushes, obamas...or ok any politician.
The breeding is going to be the biggest problem given their peculiarities, but yes it will bring in revenue, and the zoo needs it after the debacle over the poor elephants..
Back in 85 we had them for 3 months and the revenue was 6 million more than the year before.
given the change in the economy, I dunno what will happen, but I know I will be going to see them

There are exceptions to that, for instance, During the Nixon administration, China gifted a pair of pandas to the US national zoo, and when those died, china gifted two more.

The rent paid on the rest of the pandas outside of china is used primarily on programs to help the species recover. So it is not like it is going to the chinese military or something.

The latest information I can find estimates just over 1600 pandas left in the wild.

Those pandas are adorable.

Wish my zoo had them.

Of course we don't even have an elephant any more (she died a few years back)

A few months ago our last gorilla died, too. She was old, had cancer and arthritis and a host of other health problems so it was probably good that she finally passed. She was at our zoo for years, though and loved. They tried to mate her, but she didn't like other gorilla's. She felt more comfortable sitting near the glass of her enclosure watching the humans or playing with her dolls than being with other gorillas. A few months before she died, the zoo introduced a bunny into her enclosure which she loved and shared her food with and they were companions until her passing.
