Helping a friend. - 6/23/2006 12:40:48 AM

Status: offline 		i've got a friend who is in an awful situation. He has been suspected of a theft at his work that he did not commit, however the evidence is stacked against him and there is no photographic evidence (because his work has not installed video cameras) to prove his innocence and the guilt of the perpetrator. He is worried that if things go as bad as he fears he will be deported (he is a European citizen). i want to help him in any way that i can, does anyone have any suggestions?
 
So far, all i can come up with to tell him is "keep the faith, i will be praying for you." But that only goes so far and the poor man is out of his wits.
 
Any ideas would be immensely appreciated.

i told him this very same thing but, he is still terribly worried. As am i because he is such a good friend and i would hate to lose him.

i've mentioned that to him as well, unfortunately he cannot afford one and the ones i know aren't too keen on pro-bono work.

is there a legal aid in your area?

This only happened a couple of days ago and he is getting worried prematurely i believe. But, if i were in that same situation as he is, and i was (but video tapes proved my innocence) i would be reacting the same way. So far i think it is being investigating within the company, unfortunately that is not an unbiased investigation because they may take one person's side over the other based on personal likes and dislikes as opposed to the God's-honest truth.
 
He lives far away from me and i'm not sure what options he has legally. But, i am defnitely looking into it for him.

Status: offline 		i don't think they will have much problem with him then...i mean England is not a "terrorist" country. i've never heard of anyone being deported that originally from England. but i could be wrong.

I hate to say it because I'd really like to believe in the legal system, but that's pretty much been eroded by spending a decade as a police reporter.  It's going to be expensive but he needs to hire a good lawyer.  What I'd recommend doing to find this lawyer is to contact some of the reporters who work the "cop shop beat" and ask them who's good.  There are only three groups who really have this information.  Judges who are more or less bound to refuse to answer, other lawyers who will always claim their own expertise over another and reporters whose job it is to tell people things.  Personally, I'd offer a $20 at the onset of the conversation "for his or her trouble."

What the lawyer charges will probably be a lot, but when you balance it against immediate loss of salary and the change that this will haunt your friend for the rest of his professional life, he may well feel it is worthwhile.

Status: offline 		Thank you all so much for your offers of assistance, i am definitely going to implement it all as soon as possible. The lawyer stuff might take sometime to take off and get taken care of but he and i will definitely look into it. i will keep you all updated and see where it might be good to go from there.

Status: offline 		I would advise him to get a good attorney.  I once held on to the belief that the truth would eventually become clear.....one of the biggest mistakes i ever made.  Now is the time to become proactive and not wait to be put in a position of being reactive.  Seek legal advice...no point in stressing over what could be or would be until you know the options.

Status: offline 		Tell him to get a darn good lawyer.  The truth does not always become apparent.  I know, I was convicted of a crime I did not commit.  Get him some good counsel.  Wishing him well and filling him full of wishful thinking will come back to bite him in the arse in the end.
