Funny thing- just occurred to me that it's like the opposite of being a guy trying to figure out a clever, very special way of going about a marriage proposal, isn't it?

No, I don't think it is like a marriage proposal... but then I don't see a collar like marriage either, although many have compared them.
Back to what comes naturally for you.
There isn't any traditions, or at least not that I am aware of.
