We had a county election today. The other half and I voted after I got home from work. I just looked at the results. What I found really eye-opening was the registered voters versus the ballots cast. In essence, I voted for 6 people today. I knew voter turnout was crappy, but dayyyyyyyyyum.

So you're saying that 16% of the electorate showed to vote?

Voter turnout is almost always pathetic.

that's why i like the aussie system. you're required to vote. if you don't, without a valid reason, you can be fined - last i heard it was $50. voting booths are at most local schools, almost always on a saturday, all day.

i imagine many americans would moan about how it was a violation of their free will, but then they can't moan that they got the wrong person in if they didn't even make the effort.

I vote every chance I get...not my fault for someone does not and bemoans the fact that someone they don't want in office got in...

I have to agree with KMsAngel...

We also have some election going on later this year and I'm looking forward to vote...

When I was living in the UK I wasn't keen on voting so just supported my ex' party over there...

Yes. I would have to go look at the numbers again and actually do the math for the exact percent, but that is rather close. It is rather sad.

The only time I didn't vote was a school referendum. The entire town was up in arms about the proposal and the lines to vote were two hours long. The line for the ladies room was not much shorter. We said to hell with it and left.

Not coincidentally, it was the last time they made the entire town use the high school gym. We've got four different polling places now which makes it much easier.
