In the 1980's Saint Ronnie the great was the anti Christ, then it was Clinton, then Bush, now Obama.

Yeah, but given that I sort-of qualify for one of their hair brained conspiracy theories (the NWO thing) I can't really be calling the kettle black now, can I? Happily, I'm in the majority on that one.

muhly22222 -> RE: 1in 4 think Obama is the anti-christ (4/3/2013 5:07:10 PM)

Obama's as much the anti-Christ as I am.

Hmmmm...maybe that's why I like marking people? [8D]

Level -> RE: 1in 4 think Obama is the anti-christ (4/3/2013 5:08:48 PM)

The anti-christ one is what gave me pause; the NWO and disbelief in global warming is less troubling to me lol.

Glad I could make you laugh[:D]

AlittleCrazy098 -> RE: 1in 4 think Obama is the anti-christ (4/3/2013 6:34:31 PM)

There are people that believe Obama is a clone and was raised to rule the world. [:o]

Esinn -> RE: 1in 4 think Obama is the anti-christ (4/3/2013 11:13:07 PM)

Obama reminds me more of Bush than a banker, hitler or Satan. Though there seem to be quite a few similarities with all three.

I agree that it's stupid, although one thing struck me while reading the article:

quote:

Poll asking voters about conspiracy theories reveals alarming beliefs – including 37% believing global warming to be a hoax

I wonder why the author thinks this is "alarming." That is, is it alarming that large segments actually believe this kind of stuff? Or is it alarming that the author's profession and industry has done such a woefully piss-poor job of informing the public?

If a large enough segment of the population is obviously afraid, misinformed, and not trusting of the mainstream media and ruling establishment, then the only thing that's truly alarming is that the powers that be haven't really done much to try to quell or ameliorate these fears and so-called "alarming beliefs." Their usual ploy would be to use the tactics of ridicule, but even that hasn't really worked to reduce or curtail these beliefs.

Is it really true that this many people in our society has just gone cuckoo? Or is it that the establishment has pushed around, manipulated, and deceived the public so many times in the recent past that the public just doesn't know what to believe anymore? The powers that be should probably be more alarmed about that, along with their diminished reputation in the eyes of the public. Instead of wringing their hands over wacky ideas held by certain segments of the population, those in the mainstream media and government should look in the mirror and ask themselves: "What have WE been doing wrong?" That's what they need to be alarmed about, not what the public believes or disbelieves.

A pretty timid and ineffective anti-Christ, I would expect Hell to produce a significantly better champion, myself.

Generally, people come to the news media with beliefs already well established. They select the media and government that validates their beliefs. Good grief, they vote [sm=ofcourse.gif]

Yes, you are correct. So as, according to the OP:

The study revealed that 13% of respondents thought Obama was "the antichrist", while another 13% were "not sure" – and so were at least appeared to be open to the possibility that he might be. Some 73% of people were able to say outright that they did not think Obama was "the antichrist".

The survey also showed that 37% of Americans thought that global warming was a hoax, while 12% were not sure and a slim majority – 51% – agreed with the overwhelming majority view of the scientific establishment and thought that it was not. The survey also revealed that 28% of people believed in a sinister global New World Order conspiracy, aimed at ruling the whole world through authoritarian government. Another 25% were "not sure" and only a minority of American voters – 46% – thought such a conspiracy theory was not true.

What does that tell us about the US media (apart from the paranoia and/or gullibility of some of its consumers)?

Perhaps in later years, although I think that people's views are formulated over the course of an entire lifetime, not just from the news media, but from parents, school, literature, music, art, entertainment media, religion, culture, etc.

I think you're correct that people select the media and government that validates their beliefs, but I also think that the opposite is true. People deselect whatever media and government they don't trust or believe is telling them the truth.

For whatever reason, they've decided that the mainstream media are not to be trusted, so they put their trust in various alternative media who have come up with some of the wildest theories imaginable.

I don't think most people start out in life believing in kooky theories (although I could be wrong). They might tend to trust the mainstream media they grew up with, but at some point, they decide that the mainstream media/politics can't be trusted and they look elsewhere for "truth." I'm just commenting about the process, about how one gets from point A to point B.

I find the part about deselecting interesting. At first glance it seems so rational. People decide they don't trust who is telling them the truth. I would contest that it is rational. I think the deselecting process is based on the same emotions as the selecting process . . . deselecting what does not validate prior beliefs. Look at the Birther phenomenon for example. A good portion of the Republican/Tea Party base still believes Obama is an alien president, born in Kenya. I'll bet that is one emotion based motive they tune out the MSM who have consistently threatened that cherished belief. I wish I had the youth and energy to write the definitive book on the impact of the first Black president upon those with conspiratorial minds.

Not anymore. New info. Ya gotta keep up. Now they think he's a bastard son of Frank Marshall Davis.

The president now officially has the power to murder whoever he wants, wherever he wants and he doesn't have to fucking tell you. That is some sick shit.... The devil has never murdered in secrecy using the money of people living on earth (according to the bible).

Esinn -> RE: 1in 4 think Obama is the anti-christ (4/4/2013 11:18:31 PM)

For what it is worth.... George Bush & Nixon absolutely did not do this either. I am unaware of Hitler doing it in such a manner either.

Technically, many here are correct. he is not the anti-christ. As Christ (Yeshua) is not real. But that is a technicality.
