Well said. Chivalry comes with a price, and it is paid even if all are not chivalrous.

I have a feeling you'd find that a man probably wouldn't feel at ease unless he'd seen to the safety of the woman and children for whom he felt responsible, or with whom he even felt connected, first. You do an instant mental calculation that goes something like, 'I'm bigger and stronger. I can do harder stuff. They can't. And they could be pushed out of the way by bigger people.' So you sort them out, then you sort yourself out. It feels simple and very obvious. Then, once you've sorted yourself out, you can rest comfortably, knowing that you and yours are OK.

I have a sense that this kind of 'calculation' goes somewhat deeper than any purported 'erosion of chivalry by feminism' that is argued appeared in more recent years, or even the 'chivalry' that we (like to) imagine existed in the past. Both of those things, frankly, sound like wheedling drivel to me, anyway.

What I think is that my societal views do not align with my personal ones.

At the societal level I don't really understand who women & children first makes much sense. In an era where gender roles are being collapsed it seems to me like some sort of anachronism.

That's what my head says. My gut, on the other hand, tells me a very different and very non-negotiable story. In my gut, I am expendable as a male. I'm not even sure this sort of thing is a "decision" exactly. It's way more visceral than that.
