One of my favorite parts from the news story in the OP:

Considering the fact that Wayne LaPierre got a 4F draft designation (his family doctor claimed to the Draft Board that Wayne was "mentally ill" and that his family "had a history of mental illness"), thus avoiding military service during the Vietnam War, I agree that the cartoon showing LaPierre foaming at the mouth is more appropriate and more accurate.

As I have said and written before this, I believe that LaPierre's opposition to background checks would mean that, having been previously determined to be "mentally ill", he would have his personal guns taken from him and would not be able to legally buy more guns or ammunition if background checks were put into place and enforced.

Then the government--both federal and states--started regulating who was qualified to drive and under what conditions. Isn't it about time we do that with guns? Gun deaths have passed traffic deaths in the US.




I've been cut off about 5 times in the passed three days while driving. One lady tried getting into my lane while I was staring at her in the face and honking my horn. 3 weeks ago, one old lady turned into the lane I was driving in and I almost hit her. In other words, all this regulation, registration, insurance, and so on has done little to keep stupid people off the road.

Thus, why would it work any better for guns?

In 2011, 8583 people were murdered by one type of weapon, guns (an additional 18,000 + committed suicide with firearms). Less than half that amount, 4,081 were killed by every other weapon known to man including knives, blunt objects, poison, fire, pushing out a window, cars, hands, explosions, drowning, narcotics, strangulation, asphyxiation and the mysterious "other" category.

I'm pleased you found it amusing.

The number isn't for "one style of gun". It's the number for all murders where the weapon was a rifle. The number for hammers is for all blunt instruments, i.e., actual hammers and "any of various instruments or devices resembling this in form, action, or use." And both statistics are correct.

I asked you if you were including suicides in the number of gun deaths caused by legally owned guns, and I asked you for your source. Do you have a problem answering those questions? Or are you just making shit up again? It seems a reasonable question in light of your "26+ thousand" number, which is wildly wrong. For example, the CDC reports the following numbers for deaths by firearms in 2010:

Accidental discharge       606
Intentional (suicide)    19392
Assault (homicide)       11078
Undetermined intent        252

Furthermore, it's not clear to me why you would want to include suicides in your numbers, unless it's your view that saving the lives of people who want to die is worth the cost of denying an effective means of protection to people who don't. Do you have any actual statistics showing the percentage of homicides committed by owners of legally possessed guns?
