Fightdirecto -> RE: Conservative gun rights group goes after 3 Congressmen (4/6/2013 11:20:46 AM)

One of my favorite parts from the news story in the OP:

quote:

The Rigell ad opens with a photo of Rigell at an Obama bill-signing event with these words on screen: “Scott Rigell wants to pass Obama’s gun control.”

In fact, the photo comes from a noncontroversial November 2011 event in which Obama signed an executive order designating Fort Monroe as a National Monument.

So, apparently, every person who supports the idea that Fort Monroe should be a National Monument - also supports federal gun control?

Another bad case of ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome)?

Considering the fact that Wayne LaPierre got a 4F draft designation (his family doctor claimed to the Draft Board that Wayne was "mentally ill" and that his family "had a history of mental illness"), thus avoiding military service during the Vietnam War, I agree that the cartoon showing LaPierre foaming at the mouth is more appropriate and more accurate.

As I have said and written before this, I believe that LaPierre's opposition to background checks would mean that, having been previously determined to be "mentally ill", he would have his personal guns taken from him and would not be able to legally buy more guns or ammunition if background checks were put into place and enforced.

Okay I am not saying that all gun owners are phallus worshipping, racist, bigoted, paranoid, psychos but this group looks like it is missing some refried beans and a taco from their combo plate. If you know what I mean.....and I think you do!

From your link:

TV ads attacking Virginia Republicans Eric Cantor and Scott Rigell and West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin falsely accuse the three congressmen of supporting a federal gun registry. They have expressed varying degrees of support for enhanced background checks, but none has supported a federal gun registry. Nor is such a registry even being proposed.

ACLU says Reid’s gun legislation could threaten privacy rights, civil liberties

a top lobbyist for the ACLU announced that the group thinks Reid’s current gun bill could threaten both privacy rights and civil liberties... it treats the records for private purchases very differently than purchases made through licensed sellers... existing law also bars the use of those records for other purposes...” the government is supposed to be barred by the Privacy Act from transferring database information between agencies without the consent of the individual citizen.

“Once you no longer need the information, you should destroy it. Information collected for one purpose shouldn’t be used for another purpose....” But Calabrese says that Reid’s legislation fails to include those "privacy best practices... it doesn’t have any of the protections that we have in current law for existing licensees...” Reid’s legislation is hauntingly vague about who would physically keep information about American gun purchases, but it’s crystal clear that records will be kept.

I am going to report you to the NRA since you are supporting the ACLU which is on their enemies list so you can be added to the list. You don't have to thank me, the pleasure is all mine[:)]

In order to get my job I had to pass 3 background checks--an FBI check, a state police check and a state child abuse check. I also had to be finger printed.

In order to drive my car legally, I need to renew my license every 4 years and my registration every year. And I have to have insurance on that car just in case I hurt somebody or damage somebody else's car.

So why is it I can walk into any sporting goods store and buy ammunition for my son's shot gun, no questions asked? I can go to any gun show and purchase virtually any gun that I fancy, no questions asked. Yes, I need a license to hunt, but I don't need a license to buy the gun or the ammo and I can buy that ammo even if it isn't hunting season. I can do so because it is assumed I am either stocking up for hunting season or I am going to a firing range to practice my shooting. In some states, I can even buy the gun in a store without a background check. PA has the background, but it takes only a few minutes. A few minutes, even on a weekend.

Background checks, registration, licensing, insurance. None of these will impinge the rights of law abiding citizens from owning and using fire arms. When automobiles first came on the market, all one needed to do to drive was show a dealer that one could drive it. Then the government--both federal and states--started regulating who was qualified to drive and under what conditions. Isn't it about time we do that with guns? Gun deaths have passed traffic deaths in the US.

I've been cut off about 5 times in the passed three days while driving. One lady tried getting into my lane while I was staring at her in the face and honking my horn. 3 weeks ago, one old lady turned into the lane I was driving in and I almost hit her. In other words, all this regulation, registration, insurance, and so on has done little to keep stupid people off the road.

Thus, why would it work any better for guns?

LMAO talk about cherry picking stats....
One style of gun against all makes and kinds of hammers..

In 2011, 8583 people were murdered by one type of weapon, guns (an additional 18,000 + committed suicide with firearms). Less than half that amount, 4,081 were killed by every other weapon known to man including knives, blunt objects, poison, fire, pushing out a window, cars, hands, explosions, drowning, narcotics, strangulation, asphyxiation and the mysterious "other" category.

You won't get far trying to drive a nail into a wall with an ak47 either, will you?

I'm pleased you found it amusing.

The number isn't for "one style of gun". It's the number for all murders where the weapon was a rifle. The number for hammers is for all blunt instruments, i.e., actual hammers and "any of various instruments or devices resembling this in form, action, or use." And both statistics are correct.

By all means don't stop laughing.

And how many gun deaths a year are caused by people who legally owned the gun in question?

Many thousands

Does that number include suicides? What is your source?

The fact that 26+ thousand people died from being shot in 2011. unless you are claiming 80% or more of gun shot deaths, including suicides, are from illegal firearms, which is patent nonsense.

Try to make me out to be laughing about the innocent dead....go on go for it.it wont be the first time will it.

I asked you if you were including suicides in the number of gun deaths caused by legally owned guns, and I asked you for your source. Do you have a problem answering those questions? Or are you just making shit up again? It seems a reasonable question in light of your "26+ thousand" number, which is wildly wrong. For example, the CDC reports the following numbers for deaths by firearms in 2010:

Accidental discharge       606
Intentional (suicide)    19392
Assault (homicide)       11078
Undetermined intent        252

Source

Furthermore, it's not clear to me why you would want to include suicides in your numbers, unless it's your view that saving the lives of people who want to die is worth the cost of denying an effective means of protection to people who don't. Do you have any actual statistics showing the percentage of homicides committed by owners of legally possessed guns?

Take your time.

K.
