WantsOfTheFlesh is spot on. I am guessing many of those posting here dont even remember what it was like in the UK prior to Thatcher. She did what needed doing to curb out of control far left unions who were intent on wrecking the country.

Eveyone forgets New Labour, under Blair and Brown, privatised more jobs than Thatcher.

I don't.
Hence my earlier reference to poisonous Thatcherite values still lingering in the British body politic like a tapeworm.
Steve Bell wasn't happy about that either, iirc:

Pfft. Lord Archole will one day die, then simply ooze down into Lady Looney's coffin like melted goose fat.

In doing so, we help cover up the stench.

God knows I have tried to help you brits to get in the game on this American Politcal board, let me say this bluntly:

Quit talking badly about people; nicely.  Act as if this is the Saxon soccer team and you are in a pissup with the Irish (which you were damn fine at in the day, I must say.....)

Well, I admit that my age was still in single figures at the end of the '70s, but when somebody can produce any other reason for destroying any clout the TUC once had besides making it easier to outsource manufacturing and mining jobs that were providing the proles with employment, rather than them scrounging off the taxpayer and getting benefits the country can't afford, then I might buy that this was a good thing in the long run, rather than a terrible idea that only produced a few Billy Bragg records as a plus.

Moonhead -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 11:43:54 AM)

Doctor Who was better in the '70's as well...

Politesub53 -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 11:44:34 AM)

Take a read. Rampant inflation, constant strikes, rubbish piled high in the streets, we never had it so good.

Maybe I'm funny, but I'll take working three days a week over being unemployable.
Also, while it's been very fashionable to try to exonerate the Whore of Babylon by blaming all of that on the unions, it isn't like Heath was exactly blameless in that regard, is it?

mnottertail -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 11:48:32 AM)

But Maggots had no more to do with those fixes than Reagan had to do with  singlehandedly dismantling the soviet union.

Politesub53 -> RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead (4/8/2013 11:49:03 AM)

Moon, more on unemployment. The real decline in Liverpool and elsewhere was in the 70s, not the 80s.

I disagreed with Thatcher selling off the energy industries and public housing. She was also wrong about the effect of her economic changes regards the big bang. That said, you can only see that in hindsight. Blair Brown and now Cameron have continued down a similar line.

Working three days a week wasnt enough to pay the bills. It wasnt just work, it was constant black outs with power by rota. As for taking on the unions, Labour`s Wilson planned to do exactly that but chickened out.

I`m not exonerating anyone, just pointing out the realities of life in the 70s.

That's debatable: there were plenty of economists who predicted the clusterfuck the monetarist model was going to lead to when the bubble economy it briefly inflated went pop. Of course, none of these economists were paid any attention as only the inner circle of libertarian twats who told the cunt what she wanted to hear to justify her actions were paid any attention by anybody in her cabinet.
